Advice for waxing

Im not asking how to i was just wondering if anyone had tips.

I waxed my skis last night and hot scraped them and it seemed like when I hot scraped the skis a lot more wax came off.

I let the skis cool over night.

Was that to long?

Im not an expert or anything but I only let the wax stay on 15-20 minutes to absorb and then scrape it, seems to work the best.

i ski race, so i wax about everynite. hot scraping is only really good if you wanna clean the bases, but then when you wax leave it on for an hour or more. then scrape it all off, it should work pretty well. if you want some basic wax pick up some pink and purple.

After you melt the wax and then spread it out with the iron, just let it sit until its like room temp and then you know ur good to go. I normally do a ski, then the next one, then go back to the first ski and scrape the wax off.

i always try to leave them sit for a few hours/overnight before scraping. and yeah, it always looks like a shit ton comes off, but you only need to put enough on to cover the base.

apllythe iron from tip to tail a lot of time. This way, you'll get more wax into the base.
and set the iron to the correct temp for the wax.

with a pair of dry old un waxed skis i will hot scrape 5-10 times each ski with some really cheap warm wax from the shop that they use on the roller. Then i put regualar wax on and let it sit for an hour, then scrape then brush.

^thats all you really need to do. the wax is absorbed into the base and it only absorbs into the base when it is warm so once the base is room temp. no more wax will be absorbed. no point in letting them sit overnite.

letting a hot wax cool for at least an hour is key. Any less and your just going to take all of the wax out of the pores. 24 hours is best.

haha im pretty sure you are not yet qualified to do that. especially since that was a typo. you gotta notice that that was the only mistake he made in the post. why dont u hang out for a few more days before you start telling people off for their spelling mistakes.

now on topic, i usually let it get to room temp then leave it for an hour. just for good measure. but its true that no more wax is gonna soak in after it reaches room temp.

if you got any questions, you should go to www.podiumwax.com. and just email them and ask. Not just too plug the wax, but they really know what theyre doing and what to do. theyre also chill and will help you out.

I use a bar of toko wax per ski... is that too much?

And I remember hearing some old wise man say to wax your skis at the end of the season, and leave the wax on all summer long, and that your skis'll suck a lot of it up over summer.

Go to swixsport.com and click waxing school or what ever that is. It shows movies and tips on how to and what to use. I'm friends with the rep that is what he said to do.

toko says the longer you leave wax on the better (as in, wax your skis the night after skiing and scrap it off before you hit the hill).

That works fine, but is way too much wax. You don't need to float the iron, just get the base wet with it. you should use lie a 1/4 to half inch of wax, depending on bar size. This will save you wax and scarping time.

i love reading threads about waxing on newschoolers just seeing how much you guys really dont know. the only amount of time that really mtter in waxing is how long you are ironing the wax itself the longer you are ironing the more wax is absorbed into the bases. like that dude said take time ironing in the wax and after you finish one ski just do the other one and after that one youll be fine to scrape the next one.

when running the iron on the skis (after you drip the wax on it), it is best to run the iron over the base of the ski slowly and steadily, from tip to tail (or whatever) one time over.

oh and try to clean your bases before each time you wax. Youll be surprised just how dirty they get, especially in the early season and spring/summer.

funny you say that, then follow up by giving wrong info. the longer the set the better, period. will it work if you scrape in that time, yes but it is not nearly as good as letting them cool completely.

Get Toko yellow and pink wax. use an iron and drip it all over the bases and then rub the iron of the ski to smooth it around but don't keep the iron in one place for TOO LONG! Then let it sit for a while. Scrap it all off and then buff it with cork.

ive been doing nordic racing for a long time so i know a thing or two about waxing. i assume most of you know how to do it so here are some tips from my experience.

First of all never set your iron temp to high or you will melt the pores in your skis. It only needs to be hot enough to just melt the wax and only iron over it a couple times

Let the wax cool for longer then you think (1 hr), and dont be afraid to use wax, using more wax is better then and iron on your base

be careful not to get big scratches in your iron from your edges because a scratched iron means scratched skis

always go tip to tail with everything you do, it will give you a slightly better performance not that you would need though

you know its also kinda important to have clean bases. If you have a hot box to get all the crap out that is good, but since I dont have one, I just take a iron and slowly get my bases to where the wax stays liquid and wipe it off with a paper towel until its clear. and add wax each time you wipe.

^not really a good idea, youll get little bits of dust and dirt in which may damage the bases (better safe than sorry) and will slow the skis down.

you wipe it off with a paper towel? that couldnt be effiecent just use a scraper and hot SCRAPE hot scrape is the best way to clean and condition your bases.

If you use a regular iron make sure you pt water in it for steam. This seems to work best.

i race/tune my own skis a fair bit. i use hot scrapes to clean the bases, but when you actually wax your skis it's ideal to leave them for as long as possible. you were doing the right thing by leaving them overnight because it gives them the longest time to sit. a scraper (unless its a crapped out one) can't take off any more wax than you put on, so don't worry about that one.

^a scraper can take off base material tho. your best doing a pass or two with it and then going to a brush which brings out your base texture more anyways

i just clean the bases
then make sure the edges are nice and smoot, no burs
then i hot wax, leave it for a while
then scrape

unless you have a severe base angle set into your edges, plastic scrapers (as i said unless they're bend or crapped out) can't push through your edge to take off base
