Ipod restore question

I was just wondering if any of you could tell me if when u restore ur ipod (lets say a 30gb) will the full 30gb be available for storage use or is there a small part of it destined for operation purposes (like windows on a pc). I restored mine yesterday and I'm only getting 27,82gb free. thanks
