Today in my class my teacher read us some facts about religion. Since everyone is christian or atheist(like me) in this part of North Carolina, it brought some interesting reactions from people. Some were appaled and a few girls even started to cry and prayed to jesus for forgiveness when they heard that more people were becoming muslim each year then they were christian. How ignorant can they be?

you know thats wierd i was thinking to myself about something like this today and how i was ignorant. but not like they were.. like.. i've never cared what race/religion people are.. i just simply dont notice until someone points it out to me... until i went to my new school. i never realized half my friends in my town are italian... like i NEVER NOTICED! i dont know if thats a bad thing... i hope not. because i mean nothing bad of it.. and well im anglican. but i dont ever practice my religion. or cultural beliefs.. i just am kinda ignorant towards noticing or caring about peoples race/religion..

Yes Henry VIII did start the Anglican church, which was the first Protestant church. Protestant just means Non-Catholic, so when Henry separated from the Catholic Church he formed the first ever Protestant group, the Anglican Church. Now there are lots of Protestant groups, all of which come from Henry separating from the Catholic Church. the Eastern Orthodox church actually separated all the way back in the 4th century, but Henry VIII formed the Anglican, also called the Church of England, or first ever Protestant church.

Mind you, I don't know if that's just what it's like in NC but it could be like a cultrual thing or something but yah, that's the sorta thing that if you wanna do you do it in your own time and not force on other dudes, I reckon anyway.

I personaly feel that the whole practice of religon is ignorant. Religon has been abused and used to gain money and power since the begining. I have no problem with people who follow a religon I just have a problem when someone tries to force their religon on me. My feeling is that religon was created to explain every thing that science couldn't at the time. Death is very scary to some people and it is much easier on the mind to believe that if you act good you will spend eternity in heaven. Religon tends to cause some people to be very closed minded about certain issues. The only real god is the snow god.

Word up renorider. I feel exaclty the same way. Religion is cool if that's your thing but don't look down upon me if I don't practice the same beliefs and please don't try to convert me. As for the girls crying, they are ignorant. They probably think all muslims are terrorists or something.

Absolutely, but budism falls, perhaps, outside most people's idea of what religion is. I think alot of us westerners are rather unedjucated about how different some religions are. Christiany is the predominant style of religion, but there are other types (correct me if I'm wrong) that are more about growth as an individual, patience, and the strenght in yielding. I'm an atheist, but (when I'm in a good mood), buddism appeals to me. Not so much as a religion, but rather as a way to live your life at your own desgression.
But, any hint of Christian influence, opinions, and ideals anger me. I belive that the power of of this (in my opinion) ignorant religion controling me is fucking absurd and I will not stand for any form of propagandation. While this may not sound very patient of me, I know when its the time and the place for things (if I'm thinking with a clear mind that is).
Ok, I'm done. Don't bite my head off please.

and I'm not gonna really get into it. but you can be catholic and still not go to church on a regular basis. you don't have to be a quote 'slave' to the church and it's teachings. There are many misconceptions about the church too. Most people think that they renounce Evolution. But they (the Roman Catholic church) accept it and incorporate it into it's teachings to explain that the old testimant of the bible should only be used as a guide for life and nothing should be taken word for word. So I may not go to church and I am catholic but I am not a product of their propaganda. I've educated myself in other religions and science and I see no wrong in Catholicism.
The one thing that I do not like about Christianity is that there are different divisions that interpret the bible literally. when most of what we know about the world contradicts that.

Churches are so stupid they go out and build million dollar churches when they should just be giving money to poor people. Church is like a cult. I was drving down by my friends house and i saw 4 churches on one road and a church school. its ridiculous. are churches competing for buisness or something.

No I don't think it was a joke. He does bring up a good point though. I think he's just trying to show how a post such as 'religion is stupid' is kinda ignorant and prejudice.
I must agree however that the whole preaching and pushing thing is pretty annoying. I've actually been preached to for like half an hour by some stranger at a bus stop. Also once when I was at WORK, I was preached to by a stranger. Dude was saying I am a sinner, and that I'm condemned to hell, unless I convert to Christian. (As of right now, I am hindu. I was born that way, and I plan to die that way). I mean I was working in a grocery store, just trying to make an honest buck. I don't want to hear that.
I could go on, but if I told you about every time someone tried to get me to convert I'd be up for another 5 hours.

that's actually quite ignorant Tak. you can't say that Churches are business. Do companies require free government subsidy to sustain themselves (Air Canada aside). Plus there are many different types of religion. I live in a city of about 250,000 people. and there are about 5 curches that are of the same faith. if there's a capacity of 500 in each church and about hmmmm. 1% of the population actually goes that type of church then there are just enough churches to hold the amount of people that go to them. Plus lots people belong to the many different types of christianity.
You can't look at every church that has a cross on it and say that they are all the same. So they shouldn't be compared to McDonalds.

Mike, churches are businesses. How do the priests or ministers or whatever get paid? It isnt volunteer. Why do you think they send around collection baskets? They do that just to get money for the church. It isnt something you usually think of a business but it really is all about the money.

uh they send around the collection baskets to pay for church stuff, like programs, candles, wine, bread, electricity, running water, heat, phone bill, church sponsored events, ect. and yeah, actualy almost all preists are volunter.

churches are NOT businesses and priests are not volunteers. priesthood is a full-time job and they make a living doing it. they have to pay the bills just like you and me, and that's what the collection plates are for.

Any of you guys ever been to Europe? Ever seen the churches there. Where do you think they get all the money? Hmmm, kings who are thankfull for telling the peasants to keeps quiet, lest they feel the hand of God!!! Haha, yeah sorry to all the guys who are Christian, its nothing personal, but the gross overuse of the fear of 'God' has really taken away alot of respect in my opinion. From what 've seen (I as in me not you) Christianity as done alot more harm to the world than good. Sure, there's good people, but you don't have to be Christian to be a good person (in my opinion). Why are there so many religion posts these days. Anyways, I think people like sirjibalot shouldnt really have any opinion on church, particualriyly because I just read his last post. It said that he'd never go into a church, and never been to church, or something along thise lines. Therefore the only information he has eer gotten about curch, is probably form television shows making fun of religion, and people on this site explaining about christiainity. That is just pure ignorance. I think most people have this image in their head of church from TV.. with priests dressed all in black with a little white collar thing, and every one standing around in a circle, holding hands singing kumbaya, shouting out words of encouragmnet and yelling halleigluuyah. This is bullshit. Religion isnt like this, at least not where I am from. Go to church before you bash it.
