The season is starting and so are the "how do I...." threads, use the search bar.  Asking how to do something on-line and expecting it to be good information is not a smart idea.  Go to your mountian and watch the people who can do the tricks you wanna learn, ask them how they do it, most will be cool and give you a few pointers.

agreed. asking for skiing advice in the forums of a skiing website in the ski section is just plain retarded. i mean, do you really expect to get good skiing advice from skiers?

all he is saying is that SOMETIMES the people who give the advice dont actually know what they are doing. For example, somebody might be asking how to slide a rail. A correct response might include, but is not limited to: First find a small, low rail. Second, make sure there is just enough lip to pop you onto the rail. Third, approach the lip with the rail centered with your nuts. Forth, Pop and set a slow 90 degree spin to land on both of your feet simotaneously. 5th, Land on the rail with 60% of your weight on your leed foot. 6th Watch the end of the rail to keep your balance. 7th. Pop off the end of the rail, not forgetting to spin 90 degrees to land forward or backwards.

I know that that isn't the best description of how to slide a rail, but lets say that somebody who has never slid a rail gets on here and tells us how to do it. He might say something like this.

"Find the sickest rail you can, even if you bail it doesnt matter cause its gonna look sick. This is how i learned, so you gotta do it too. First go into the rail and just huck as big as you can onto it. You will probably clear the first half of the flatbar, but it doesn't matter, it means that there is less metal to slide. Next just try to land on atleast one of your feet, you can put the other one down later. Bend Down and touch the rail, it will make it look steezier. Now just huck something off the end, it will make you look like you know what to do."  <---- DONT FOLLOW THIS ADVICE

no, hes saying that asking for advice is a bad idea. when clearly, as you just said, you can get some great advice on NS. just because some advice is shit doesnt mean you shouldnt ask at all

dude......there is nothing wrong with asking for advice. Do you think kids just show up to the hill knowing how to throw a sick mute 7. No. Do you think kids know how to do switch ups on their first try on rails..no. If you don't like it, switch to a different forum, and shut the fuck up. I like to give advice, and help the sport grow, you can go fuck your self.

Asking for advice on a fourm can be VERY helpfull i will admit that, however it seems like some people dont even try the trick before they ask for advice.  When you post anything on NS you are going to get a lot of completly useless stuff.  Because of that people should deffanatly not take most of the advice given here seriously, a much more effective way to get help is by watching better skiers and  their movements.  If you can't tell by watching someone how it is done, ask the person they may beable to show, or give you pointers of what exactly you are doing wrong.   I dont know about you but on most days in the park if a random kid comes up to me and asks for advice on something i'll give it to them.  Hopefully this litlle rant will help clear up the meaning of my thread.

Hey, I don't know anyone that learned a "sick mute 7" off of forum advice. Personally, and in the case of many people that I know, when I learned a "sick mute 7" I already could do a "sick mute 5" and I could already do a "sick mute 5" because I could already do a "sick mute 3", If you are having to ask advice about how to do a "sick mute 7" you probably shouldn't be doing it, because you are probably missing some steps. Now obviously there are some tricks that you do need to ask advice on, but personally if I were to  wonder how to take my cork 9's to a d-spin 9 (if i can do a cork 9 i probably don't need to ask anyone, it should come natural),, I wouldn't post it in a public forum, i would either 1. Ask someone personally who knows how for some advice, 2. I would practice alot on the tramp, and 3. If i needed more advice I would probably ask the pros on Spyders website. That is all.

i agree w/ using the search bar, but any advice is good advice. what if they come from somewhere with a very small scene, hence no one/very few to look up to/ask for advice? and if a kid is kind of shy, he's not just going to ski up to the sickest guy in the park and ask how to do a trick.

a forum is for asking people things and sharing information, so let it be done. just because you are on a messageboard far more than anyone needs to be doesn't mean you get to dictate what questions should and shouldn't be asked.

and i'm all for how to threads, who cares if someone asks how to do a simple trick a bunch of times, thats what this forum is about, helping out other skiers. as long as they have obvious thread titles they shouldnt bother anyone
