Skiing around Rome, Italy

I'm studying abroad (har har studying a-broad.. heard it already) in Rome til Dec. 17th.. has anyone experienced Roman/Italian pre-winters? Will I get to ski anywhere around Rome before I'm shipped back home? I know alps are an easy answer.. but I'm looking for a day trip due to cash money shortage. I heard about this place Roccaraso.. but I wanted to see if anyone knew about anything else. Thanks!

Unless you're prepared to travel to the Alps you'll probably have to leave your skis behind. Winter in Rome is mild and snow in December is really unlikely.

alps are the only option i'm afraid. silvretta nova has the best park i think- pm michealbc, he knows the area pretty well i think.

There is skiing all over Italy ranging from the Alps and Dolomites, all the way through the Appenini down to Sicily where you can ski on the Etna (3350m). Italy is the most mountainous country in Europa. There are several resorts around Rome.

Unfortunatly I doubt any resorts will be open before the first half of December (except the alpine resorts which are 8 hours away from Rome). However usually there is a perturbation coming from the south early december shitting all over the place, at least in the southern / mediterranean alps, so you should keep an eye open for resorts that might open early.

jeaaaaaa. i was just in rome this summer. itsss soooooo sick there. but i do not think there are any resorts close to it. mostly flat there and the alps are a ways away. but i was eyein up this rail in front of the vatican in st peters square that would make for a sickkkkk urban sesh.

uhm.

Sierra Nevada, Spain 3400m with ski resort on it
Etna, Sicily 3350m with 2 ski resorts on it
Corsica has a couple of ski resorts and some very rugged mountains.
there are several ski resorts in Greece, also on the Peloponessos
and several more resorts in the former yugoslav countries

and most of all: Lebanon should have the best skiing of the mediterranean.

and for this dude above, grab a map and open your eyes: there's plenty of ski resorts close to Rome.

true that. then of course there are some decent resorts in the alpes du sud/alpes maritimes. Isola 2000 isn't bad and only 1 1/2 hours from the med...

you kind find skiing in most places you wouldn't expect, you just gotta look. ok, maybe not holland...

I realize that there is pleanty of skiing in europe and even in italy - since they hosted the olympics and all - but just didn't know there was skiing in the med.

Dude, go to Cimone, it's not THAT far away (i would guess 3 hrs) - just southwest from Bologna in the appinnees and they have a great park. Plus, I know a guy on the park staff too and he's pretty solid.  It's also in the right region for the best food in Italy.   http://www.snowparkcimone.it

Val Gardena and Val di fassa are your best bets for a truly Italian skiing experience... (Canazei!) with something like 600 sq km of skiiable terrain covered by one pass that costs 30 euro, you can't go wrong.  Plus it's never cloudy, scenery is gorgeous and the food is to die for... it's a long way from Rome though.

wasnt aimed at jibsworth, but the guy above who said the area around rome is flat and without ski resorts. Sorry for the confusion.

As for no skiing in holland: watch out with what you say hahaha.

HardcoreHarriet:. If you're in Rome, you might want to check a private Bar called Insane rider's Lounge. It belongs to the clothing brand Insane from Italy, they'll open up the door and ask you what you want, tell them you heard about the place from skiers and they'll let you sign up for membership also you're cute so it shouldn't be to tough.I'm not sure if it still exists but it was in the 20s on Via Filippini ....Pretty cool little bar.
