I am currently in the market for a WRX and was wondering what WRX owners think of them. I am looking at a '02 WRX with 60,000k on it. Do these cars hold up well? What are your thoughts and opinions?
not sure about that years, but i learnt to drive manual in a 05 one.
nice to drive, very easy to handle.
one of my mates has one of the ones your asking about, and it seems good to ride in.
i never got to drive his, i wasnt 16 at the time so i didnt have my license, and then it got written off by his gf.
then he got another one. that got written off too. by the gf.
then he got the manual one as mentioned up there.
so im guessing if he got 3 in a row, and they arent really that cheap, then they are a good.
I've had an 02 wagon for a year now. No complaints. The only problems I've had are ones I've been dumb enough to cause (wee little accident). I'm currently at 102,000km and have had to do nothing but scheduled maintenance. I had an aftermarket suspension that needs tuning, but thats cause its set up hard and my roads suck.
I drive it to whistler often and on snows with 50% tread it still was awesome. Even in a couple inches of snow I was leading the way with a couple audis behind me. Works quite well as a ski car, however it is cramped with 4 people and ski gear, and going up hills you need to keep the revs high to continue to pass people, but it has absolutely no problem keeping up. Gas milage is so-so. But I've got an aftermarket chip, up-pipe, down-pipe and full STi exhaust, so I can't expect steller numbers. Currently about 470-480kms/tank (60 litre tank) and thats probably about 66% city/33% highway. I've had over 500kms/tank tank a number of times, but only with considerable highway driving.
For me, someone who doesn't have to drive clients around and have a spacious comfortable car, it works well. Great awd system, decent room for ski gear and golf clubs, and little expense besides scheduled maintenance. Don't be surprised if you have a couple more speeding tickets and go through tyres faster than normal though.
Also, a tip regarding insurance, its a lot less for the wagon. (In BC, with no discount, 2900 wagon vs 3600 sedan)
if you're lookin at an 02-03, make sure everything is all checked out by a mechanic and is in working order. the transmissions they used in the earlier wrx didnt really like being launched off the line in 1st gear so much, and if the previous owner beat on the car, it could cause some problems with the tranny so just make sure thats in good working order.
i drove one and it was a fun car, what i didnt like is that it felt really sluggish unless your at really high rpm's. so i got an s4 and its way better, but wrx's are cheap as fuck now and its a great deal.
hahah s4s....lol worst car for reliablity and repair ever.......most s4s have their turbos fail before 100k miles and in order to replace a turbo on that car you need to completly remove the engine and its a bitch....couple kids i know have modded s4s and they are nothing but problems........WRX is a solid car everyone i know who has one loves it , just make sure to get the tranny checked out becasue the wrxs are known for having weak trannies especially if they have been beat on or modded
actually most s4s (2.7L) have their turbos fail before 50K. its a very expensive car to run, and quite a bit different than a wrx. It's still a sweet ride, but there is a large difference in intial price, and an even big one to keep it running.
i wanted a rex so bad this summer, but insurance was something like $6000/ yr so that was a no go. I got an integra gsr instead and could not be any happier, most fun car i have ever driven.
how the hell would your insurance be 6 grand a year?! i am paying less than 500 a year on a 98 legacy gt right now. granted its not a wrx, but there is no way my insurance would jump to 6 grand if i traded my car.
they are generally "black listed" if you are not at least 25 or so.
meaning that insurence companies just WONT cover you, a friend of mine could have easily gotten a WRX but he ended up with a 2.5RS after his Ins. Company said HELL NO to the WRX
yeah i know, i kinda wish i knew how expensive they get before i bought it. its not that they have alot of problems, its just that its alot of money when they do. the good thing though is everything that breaks is something that can be modded, like for me the 1st and 2nd gear syncros went bad, my dad triend driving it home starting in 4th every time and that fucked up the clutch and flywheel, so i got a stasis tranny, stg 2 clutch and lightweight flywheel, and when my turbos fail which should be soon cause they are running 300% harder than they should, you can get ko4's. so if you want to mod your car, its actually really good for it.
i had a friend sell his wrx for an s4 cause he hated how slow it felt in the mountains, and wrx's arent exactly reliable either, but they are cheaper to fix.
