Has anyone ever used the hip/butt pads that go under your pants? I have only seen them at snowboard shops and was wondering if they actually help or just make you look like a rhino-ass.
I wore slider shorts a few times, they helped a bit when I was trying to learn rails. They are used in paintball and have pads on the hips and the pads are on a tight spandex type short. Pretty good.

I never ride without them, mine have hard plastic and 2 layers of foam, last year i dropped a cliff and hip checked a rock, i would have shattered my pelvis if i was'nt wearing them.
wow obviously you've never worn armor, my friend has this bike armor that he uses for bikin and one day he let me use it to ski and when i fell on a rail it didnt really hurt http://www.dainese.com/pre.asp
I busted up my hip pretty bad from other sports. Fell early season last year, and re-injuried it bad. Went and bought a pair of the Red pads and won't ski without them.
You can wreck on rails, fall on big jumps, and still walk away to ski the next day.
Let people call the "fag pads", without them I would be a fag. It would be all groomers in a wedge!
If you are just learning or have old injuries like me, then I would suggest them.
i know what you guys are talkin about but i dont think they're neccessary... they dont make you a better skier, its just a comfort thing... i've never used them or really felt compelled to use them, it seems like they would just weigh you down/get in the way but like i said, i've never used them...
i just dont think its worth droppin around 100bucks on them when you can just grow balls for free...(thats what i hear that they cost brand new but who knows)
well Im not as cool as everyone that doesnt wear them, but fuck ya it helps. I ve takin some hits doing urban and the def saved me. also they make you look a little bigger but not much. I wear Xl or XXL , but when I wore Large stuff people thought i was fat.
wear them if you like them, but they are still gay, and you'll be considered gay compared to your other fellow skiers who take the hits on the concrete or whatever and don't wear a thing. i say suck it up
i have a pair of those, but i dont wear them as much as i used to. They make it hard for your pants to stay on, and you are always adjusting the pad under your pants. plus it restricts leg movement. like even if they are not sagging you still have you pants kind of low, so then you pants pull down you ass pads and you feel real unconfortable. If you pull your pants up you end up looking mad goofy b/c it appears as though you are a gaper and soon enough the ass pads will fall down inside your pants and you have to take off you pants just to pull up you ass pads again. you also sweat liek crazy and soon enough the ass pads will smell like ass
For all the people that say suck it up, Try falling over and over until the bone is bruised, then imagine your ski rolling under you at high speed on top of the binding at that. Then you wonder why your leg muscle has a hole in it where you rolled over your binding. call me a pussy, but i'll be going alot bigger than you.
My bro has them. He annihilated his ass once off a table. He's a boarder though. I was going to get some, but I unno, I don't like the feeling of them. Like they're awesome and definitely save your hips and ass. But it's not my style. I unno, i skateboard, I like the free feeling.
I just hate when people start saying why protect yourself more, just grow balls and toughen up. Screw you guys, maybe we want to survive in one piece until we are very old, and be able to have kids for a while, or to ski until we die! Pads aren't gay, and they don't suck.
They don't make you better, like anything else in the world, but they can help you improve by giving you the comfort you need to go bigger and even if you bail you will be able to get up and walk it off.
yea theyre a little uncomfortable at first but you get used to them, they helped me so much with rails, not really that much with jumps except for one time wen i came off really backseat and almost broke my tailbone
Have any of you ever worn motorbike pant and/or jacket cause you could take about the biggest crash ever and be perfectly fine, but they wouldn't be that great to ski in, but for crashing the best. I should try mine this year just for shits and giggles.
I love them. Some people say it makes you pussy if you use them but why the hell wouldn't you use them(asied from bulkiness and $$$)? Land flat in the pipe and smash your ass into the ground your day is as good as done, not with the hip pads, it still hurts at first I've noticed but when I land on my ass with them on I don't get the bruising I would without them so by the time I'm at the top of the chair again I'm ready to go
