Do any of you train some form of martial arts or hand to hand fighting. I am looking to start for a few reasons. I'v got enough time to train. I'd like to get back into shape. If I train I'd prefer it to be hand to hand combat while standing. Not into the whole ground combat thing to much like Brazilian jujitsu.

I think I might take boxing and Brazilian jujitsu. So I can fight standing up and on the ground.

you should get in decent shape before starting because you will get worked super hard (depending on the level). you should look into kickboxing to start. also, you should start watching the UFC or Pride fighting, that will get you pumped to learn.

start out by finding a Muay Thai gym around you, that is the best training for stand up fighting. Then if you decide that you want to start doing MMA matches you will be much more prepared than if you just box. If you do start MMA then you gotta do brazilian jiu jitsu. the submissions you'll learn will allo you to beat the shit out of your buddies. and as far as muay thai goes, there's nothing like getting in a fight and giving a kid an instant dead leg with a kick, and then just striking the shit out of the rest of ihm.

I took an intergrated martial arts program. It was 3 parts, there was a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu part, a Kick boxing part as well as a common self security part (like, what to do if someone comes at you with a knife) There are alot of gyms around that teach this kind of class.
From what I learned is that having the combined parts allows you to be a more rounded fighter. If your a great boxer but cant fight on the ground, all some one will do is go for submissions. Similarily, if your a great submissioner, you dont stand a chance in a boxing match.
So young grasshopper, combine yo shit.
PEACE!
