It's alright if the jump is sketchy but that was just retarted. Worst jump I've ever seen not to mention the most dangerous. Absolutly horrible

the athletes can handle themselves and they seemed to do pretty a pretty decent job clearing the jump for the most part.

Because it was ill-organized, a nasty set up, and god aweful coverage.

freestyle.ch had a similar setup, in the summer. sure it wasnt ideal, but overall it was far superior that this. They had respectable emcees, unlike icer, and a setup worth doing stuff on.

There is a difference between challenging and neglect. They dropped the ball. It had the potential to be one of those purely awesome events. but nope

people makes mistakes. he designs a beautiful xgames course, and operates a pretty sick company that makes delightful terrain parks. this was not one of his masterpieces

yes it could have been that dangerous because one girl skier went over 20 stairs and tomahawked onto her head and didnt move. another fell into the gap where she could have easily missed the safty net and fallen to her death or with into the scaffolding.it

I saw her do a pretty big cab cork 7 at Whistler last year and i was like 'oh my god i wanna marry her'

yea read that shit^^. poor kaya.. landed a dope ass 540 and would have won if she didnt get caught up on the ply wood on the side. that was probably the worst crash i have ever seen. she got thrown like a rag doll and couldnt stop. it just wasnt worth it to set back anyones season like that. shes a tough girl though, mad respect to her.

danza, go away. now. most people can go out and build a jump out of scaffolding and make it safe. considering how much time and whatever budget it must have taken to build that mega monster of death, they could have done soooo much better. there are plenty of mega ramps built every year, bringing in people that know how to build this shit would be such a great idea. and a massive gap to nothing? fucking serious? i'm suprised the insurance company let anyone stand on it. I can't even get the walls on my gap jump at the resort to be vert. they have to be angled or the insurance company closes the parks.

this isn't skiing. it's a horrible business idea thrown together by someone that fell out of the sport and doesn't have a clue whats going on, but wants to make money off corporations. there isn't any progression of the sport here. the only people that want to push it are the athletes, and how the hell can you push it with this bullshit setup.

well, then he built the jump for himself because almost everyone was disapointed the jump. Anyways he put it on for "park rats" becuase he only hit it twice, and to tell you the truth the jump sucked ass for a lot of people but shit at least they tried and have something to build on for next year, its called progression. Johnny was a dumbass if he was the one who shaped it though not safe at all

That was seriously the biggest shit fest ever. It wasn't a big jump at all, sketchiest thing ever like it wouldn't have been all the hard to build in some sort of transitions. I can't believe how badly they screwed that up. It was a great idea, it looks like they had tons of money, it wouldn't really have cost much more to make it safer/less sketchy. If I was there to compete after watching Kaya fall like that I probably would have pulled out and slapped mosely accros the face

"Anyways, I got to hit the jump yesterday, got to dress in Bond's locker and get treated like a rockstar for a day. Pretty fun day, except for the jump was the single worst jump I've ever hit in my entire life. The worst tranny's to jump ever, the sketchiest jump construction ever and the lamest regard to safety ever. There wasn't even a net until the athletes demanded to get one put up or none of us would even jump. And the steps on the side of the landing being unpadded and not covered with snow was just plain stupid. Their planning singlehandedly led to Kaya's punishment (the girl who tumbled down the side). Btw, she's okay...sort of. I went to the hospital this morning to visit her and there is good and bad. No broken bones or anything of that sort, but she has some minor internal injuries that may require surgery. She's in her second CT scan around now I believe to determine the possible need for surgery. The doctors are super positive for a full recovery, but Kaya (Turkski) is super nervous because she's never sustained an injury like this before and has never even had surgery before. Please send positive vibes, prayers and anything else that could help.

Other than that the event was quite fun and I couldn't believe they let a big mountain skier hit that shit "

yeah, i did a rail jam in the street with 1 days notice and $10 for nails, it went off smoother than thta, and we had quite the crowd. not saying we are close to being top athletes. but give me a few $k and ill make it better than what he did

If they can't do it well and safely they shouldn't have done it all. Last years event was sketchy but not really dangerous. It was overall a fun time despite most people not making the landing. You'd think they would have learned and made the inrun way too long this year just incase they didn't go as fast as they thought they would (especially since a ski wax company is sponsoring the event and it doesn't really look good for people using their product not being able to get enough speed) I can't believe they didn't wanna put up a net. That girl would have died. No chance of survival. She would have fallen like 75 feet then gotten torn up in the scaffolding. The obviously don't know what they're doing and Icer Air should not be repeated next year

my friend bev almost fucking died.. she lost her balance and went into the sketchy ass net that they weren't even planning on putting up!! if she had any more speed she would have gone threw the hole and hit the scaffalding. it was insane!

word, i was promised access to 2 hours of jump time and it was so late that they cut me out, i walked around pacbell with fucking vicious all morning for nothing, they finaly decided to put the net up at noon and it was a no go for me, i was relieved but at the same time still pissed.. i am glad that net went up or it would have ended in death for that one snowboard chick.

I just watched the video of Jonny doing the backflip on his jump... his tips came SO close to clipping the edge of the landing. He would have gotten owned in the face! ...and I would have laughed.

the big issue was the jump construction, the gap was just insane and simply neglegent that they even considered letting people hit it with no net. had the transition been existant at all maybe you could have convinced someone crazy to hit it once as a stunt. Im just relieved no one died and still angry kaya got hurt, it was seriously scary watching the girls hit the thing early on... they couldnt get enough speed and about half of them crashed real hard. The footage cut out twice due to nearth death in the first 5 min of the thing!!! compared to that watching people nearly die, the rest actually went somewhat normally.

As far as the spectical of the event for Joe Shmo..AMAZING!
As far as looking out for the riders and saftey...dam near NEGLIGENT. Thats my professional opinion and yes I was there and yes these types of events are my career and thank god I had nothing to do with this junk show.

City events are a good thing to promote our sport, but why build such a huge, sketchy jump, when you don't have enough speed for reaching the landing properly. end of september I was in zurich at the freestyle.ch. the jump was alot smaller, but safer and way better in my opinion. the riders did really nice switch 10 jon ollson and jacob wester even did the kangoroo flip. it was a very warm day and in the afternoon speed issues became a slight problem, but still they were able to sick tricks like jon ollsons switch misty ten. and they had a lift taking the riders to the top.
I hope Icer Air is organized next year again, but hopefully with a smaller and safer jump!

Well I guess since ur swiss u know exactly what happened two years ago..the whole ramp broke down before the competition ..I dont wanna know what would of happen if the riders would of been up there while it broke down.. Thats probably why its so safe and might a little smaller now

You know, they almost had to move the 2005 event to Oakland or Berkeley. They were going to either hold it on one of the streets at the Cal campus that was pretty fucking steep, or on one of the streets up in the hills that was even steeper. It would have been moved to the winter though, because they would have had to replan the whole thing.

This event was eh.. iono. It was very incredible and then very horrible.

Pros:
-Skiing event in november, in SF (which is super close to my home) With the most incredible backdrop ever...
-LOTS of free swag and shit... I think I came home with about 8 free shirts from like, sessions and smith and a bunch of ski resorts.
-TONS of giveaways for skis and goggles and really expensive swag.. also big fat heli trips to BC and AK.
-Tony Hawk and Johnny Moseley (Love em or hate em) still showing that they can pull off some pretty impressive stuff.
-Hot chicks. Lots and LOTS of hot chicks. It was like the vegas strip in some areas haha. (I'm sure there were cute boys there too, ladies)
-Awesome bands. Ladytron was pretty sick, I must admit. Its not my favorite, but pretty cool to see live nevertheless. Jurrasic 5 was really freaking awesome too, but there were times at which during the concert that I would peer over and really want to watch the skiing rather than a concert. Also, during the concert they added quite a bit of snow coverage to the landing, so it did make it better... kinda...
-Injured athletes still showing up. JJ Thomas, CR, and Ashley Battersby were all there still, even though they werent competing at all due to injury. I give props to them for coming out and signing autographs and stuff for all the groms, even though they didnt nessesarily need to. They werent competing or anything..




Cons:
-Very slow and pretty unsafe jump. (WTF 2x4's instead of padding?)
-Turski getting owned... I felt almost sick to my stomach after seeing it.. especially being I was about 7 feet away from where she landed... She was alright, but shes going to be pretty bruised and shaken up. Maybe a few scrapes too.. wood is unforgiving.
-Horribly run audio... They had music + Announcers + roadies checking the mics at the same time. i was seriously pissed the fuck off... They just totally checked all the sound levels to unnessessary levels... the roadie testing that shit just kept going 'HOO. HA. HEE. HURRRRRR. HEEEEEY. HEY. HEY. HEY. HEY. HURRRR. HOOOO HA. HEY. HEEEEY." and it got really annoying because thats the only thing you could hear for about 5 minutes.
-REALLY SKETCHY JUMP. I mean, it was pretty awesome that they built this thing, but they could have done better. They should have installed some sort of padding along the side, so turski, or anyone else wouldnt get hurt (a snowboarder almost ate it during practice earlier that morning, the exact same way. Luckily that time, the boarder was able to stop by catching onto a 2x4. Yay.) They also had very shitty snow coverage.. You would think they would have had an Ice truck and one of those ice shredders back there turning the ice into snow all day, kinda like they do at EVERY OTHER PRESEASON EVENT... (Go to Mthigh.com and check out the video section to see EXACTLY what I'm talking about)
-Really annoying announcers.. Dingo was pissing me off the whole time because he didnt know jack squat, and Johnny Moseley was kinda talking nonsense as if he was on drugs. Tony Hawk actually seemed a bit perturbed by him. I have tons of respect for Johnny for throwing this event, but hes horrible when unscripted.
-Really annoying people at the event who were there just to see Jurrasic 5 or something. I mean, cmon. That was just totally lame. Tons and tons of thugged out gangster wannabies that 'get hyphy' and 'rep the bay' and all that bullshit were there and kinda brought a bad element to the event for a little bit.. I heard this one group of thuggish kids making fun at some little kid holding a skateboard, calling him a stupid skater kid when he didnt do anything. Just so wrong. Also, the place was infested with people that probably didnt even know you could do such stuff on skis... which is cool, because now they know, but I was getting shit all night for saying I was a skier from random people.. who told me that skiing is 'gay' and 'lame' and shit like that. Whatever.. they obviously dont get to go to the snow enough anyway.

Overall, I really liked the event, because it was close to home, and very abstract (skiing in november in SF? wtf?) but there were enough problems with the whole thing that there is a lot of room for improvement next year, if they have it again. I was at ICER 2005, when they had it on the streets, and there wasnt even close to being this much publicity. It was kinda just a spur of the moment, "lets truck in snow to SF and hold an event" kinda thing. They almost called off teh event after the people in that neighborhood bitched hardcore. There wasnt really any free swag, and the sketchyness of the jump was still pretty bad, although it was a bit more natural and it was way safer in my opinion. I hope they do have it next year, and I hope they run the event much better (I.E. Better announcers, better, safer jump, less bullshit). overall, I had a shitload of fun, and I'm even more stoked for ski season now than ever... Too bad they cant hold it on the streets again though... too many bitchy yuppies in SF and the event would be too big now to hold all those people. I think this event will spur off a bunch of other events in a bunch of other cities accross the nation and abroad. The magnatude of this thing was just incredible and if the art is perfected, they can have something beyond comprehension.

P.S. I freaking hope Kaya Turski is doing alright... I still feel so horrible for her, especially being she stuck that shit pretty smoothly, it was just a problem with the jump and all that shit. I wish her the best.

On another note, it was incredibly gay that the only way to the top of the jump was up about 7 flights of stairs.

The thing was unnessesarily tall. They could have made it about 50 feet high with a not-as-steep landing. Hell.. the landing had them carrying so much speed that a few of the guys barrelled into the athletes down at the bottom because they couldnt stop and there was a slight absense of snow.

(Oh, and because the snow melted throughout the day, the field became a mudpit, especially in the baseball dirt.. and it made my shoes a wee bit dirty)

Yeah but no matter what the safety of the athletes needs to be taken into account. 

The landing could have been shorter in length and way wider.   As the original poster said, there could have been barriers.  

Icer air did a HUGE amount for promotiong the sport to the general public.   For this, it was excellent.   But watching that, I mean come on that thing was not safe. 

Look at Summer X a few years back... they had a big air jump, and the landing was plenty wide and overall not too bad. 

This one was sketch, and it IS the responsibility of the event organizers to keep athlete safety in mind. 

The whole problem is media sources and people wanting athletes to perform their little trick show, and not taking the proper percautions to keep them safe... just because it would have cost a few more bucks.

This is the right point.   If the masses saw people dying out there it would have seriously hindered the progression of our sport.

Wow... I mean come on I'd say hating is deserved. 

We need this kind of a thing to promote our sport, it just has to be carefully calculated.   There are plenty of contests like this that have happened around the world, most of them are just designed with safety in mind.
