yes it should. when you go to france you dont see them throwin down the red carpet so we can speak english. just like any country you go to. you speak the language they speak there. we speak english. but actually. i think the whole debate is just a waste of money and the government trying not to focus on more important issues.

You cant be a free country with a national language. Society will decied on the majority language and it will prevail but creating a national language will rip america apart even more than the class war.

what pisses me off is in my 318 course some chick who can barely speak english is trying to get us to vote for some new law or whatever that allows undocumented (illegal) students to go to college. I think thats bullshit, freedom is speech and expression is great, but imagine how disfunctional of a country we didnt have a common language we all spoke. English is that common language and if mexicans are too fuckin lazy to learn english and appreciate our culture instead of cutting people then they can stay on their fabulous beaches drinking there baccardi and cokes watching fish swim in their light blue waters. too those who say english is too tough for them to learn because its "such a hard language" I got news for you, i learned english and spanish, so fuck you por favor
im not racist, just to those liberal mexicans thinking we should adapt solely to them because its taken em 9 times to try and get across the border (ILLEGALLY) getting stopped by immigration and their guides rippin em off.

How the hell do you suggest educating people who don't speak English then? Teach them how to use English in English, brilliant fucking idea. You're against translators for Hospitals? I hope you mean for doctors (even though I doubt there are any who can't speak English, they simply would not have made it that far) because depriving patients from translators so they can communicate with the staff is unbelievably illogical. You have to remember that just because English would have the title of "official" doesn't mean people are automatically going to learn it right away, if at all.

classes r always a great option, if u r willing to succeed in the US then u will do whatever it takes to learn English, obviosly they wont learn english right away, but it is terrible hwo we give in to all of the ppl who do not speak english, we just have translators for evreything. if u go to another country, do they give u all of the translators the US gives? no u HAVE to speak their language, or else ur pretty much screwed.

Man, as a Canadian I always find this so interesting. Depedning on where you are in Canada, all you really need is english, but if your in Quebec or New Brunswick then french is also really important, but nobody thinks twice about switching between the two when neccesary. There's always such a debate in the states between freedom and assimilation. I agree with the fact that immigrants should learn english if moving to the states, but i also agree with the side that promotes freedom of language. There are so many parallels between Canada and the States, we're so much alike. But one thing I've never experianced personally, and yet find fascinating nonetheless, is the alienation felt towards the illegal immigrants. The Mexican issue just doesnt exist here. Not a bit. As Canadians were used to immigrants but the illigal immigration problem in the Southern states is so massive and receives so much publicity and yet I've experianced none of it. I just find first hand experiences and opinions from you guys really fascinating. because it always comes up during immigration debates and yet I find the flood of Mexican immigrants into the staets hard to imagine. I can't think of the last time I heard anyone speak Spanish within earshot of me.

English is only the dominant language because most of the early imigrants spoke it. Now there is a second wave of imigrants speaking spanish and who is to say that they can speak their own laguage if they want to. America is great because of it's freedom and that freedom means that people moving here don't need to accept one standard of life. The point of us being a free country is that anyone can come here and be who ever they want and the government cant stop that. If the imigrants want a decent job they will learn english but if they are "too lazy" they will just rot in a under-minimum wage job.
Free speach is not unilingual.

It seems pointless to me. So what if we make it our official language, it'll do about as much good as building a fence on the border. Like, when all our ancestors immigrated here, people were assholes to them, and it sucked for them. Now we look back on those people and we're like, damn people were bitches to our grandparents, but at the same time we're doin the same shit to mexicans. History's gonna look back on us and be like, those guys were pricks.
