Cataloochee in North Carolina is opening this saturday before most other resorts in the south. And it is on actual snow, not hay or some tarps. It is cold in the south. So, anyone who lives in the south. Go skiing on saturday. I will hopefully be there.
"It is cold in the south". I think you need to redefine cold. I live in Virginia and it was 72 degrees yesterday, 55 on Afton mountain which is higher than where you live. It has been below freezing a couple of nights on the mountain, but I have no idea how your mountain is pretending to have an actual base for skiing. Couldn't be more than a 20 foot wide slope that is 400 feet long.
However, I would mostly likely still be skiing on it if I were you, as well :)
yea it can get cold in the mtns, the summit at catt is 5400 feet and at beech its like 5600, and theyve had about 6 nights in the teens so far. its in the low 30's there now and they will start making snow shortly with this cold front. yes the slopw will be about 2000 feet long but it is skiing and ive ben waiting 7 months fro this, they will have boxes and rails setup and some jumps, and thats all i want. and its the earliest opening date in nc history i think.
The story about that place is posted at www.freeskier.com, along with a web photo of their conditions. You can compare and constrast North Carolina with another shot of Copper Mountain, which opens Friday. I think I like Copper's chances a lot better, but that's just me. . .
haha thats amazing...i hate when i look at the temperatures and shit and i see that its colder in sc and nc that it is here in NY....or when you guys get 2 feet and we get rain
when is it supposed to be 50 degrees, dont know where u got that number. all of you guys think that because nc is farther south its always warm and shitty, well its not. we have tons of mtns over 6400 feet and they are pretty gnarly, some get about 115 inches of snow each year, and its always cold in the winter. grandfather mtn(like 5700 feet) had the highest recorded wind speed on earth last year, and it is normal for the temps to get to 0 to -12 in the winter. so even though we are further south doesnt mean that its warm and always sucks. and nc has the highest mountain in the east. it can warm up in the winter to the 50's like it can naywhere, but the next day it could be 5 degrees and a blizzard. im just really happy that i get to ski this early, its like a dream come true. and yes the run open this weekend will suck compared to copper or killy or any other mega resort in the ne or out west, but its skiing in nc on nove. 4th and i really dont care what its like, its gonna be sick.
