Damn. I can't even give away free money without people turning me down!
I work for Service Canada (CDN Government) and am responsible for promotiong the Canada Education Savings Plan (gvt. gives you free money to help start saving for your childrens P.S. education) in my region.
I've been calling places like libraries, banks, daycares, etc. seeing if they will let me display some pamphlets. Before I can even finish my speach about the program i'm getting turned down by people saying they are too busy or not interested. I guess knowing your stuff comes off as being a 'salesmen' these days. People are so closed minded. For fuck sakes I'm trying to give away FREE MONEY for post secondary education! what more do people want? I guess this is a rant more then anything, but does anybody have any advise on how to come off a little less 'salesmanish' I guess?

Be meek.
Or get a job where you're selling something, maybe you'll be good at it.

Don't be pushy, casually talk to them, and try to relate to them. Many sales people come off as if they were reading out of a book.

Start the convo with:
"Hey, how's it going?"
They answer
"That's cool. What are you doing right now?"
If they say "nothing" then you can jump into the speech.

ask who to contact about a business proposal, then call that person. or go in person. but jsut talking to the first person to answer the phone is destined for failure. i mean, its not part of their job so why would they do it
