Dude, that's some hard-core shit right there. I just don't see how you can go from base to summit without skins. You'd post-hole every other step. I'm guessing you don't go very far in the BC? Anyway, can you say why you choose AT over Teles? I mean, I always wanna tele cos it's awesome, but its so hard and I suck at it, so I'm tempted to use AT. I'm 15... is there still time for me to get good at tele-ing?
Dammit I didn't mean to use Italics for the second half of that post. There should be a way to edit your post... Also, Oasis are legendary and Noel Gallagher is a god among men.
First answer to your question...yeah, you have tons of time to get good at tele.....but its totally different and alot more physically demanding.
For mountaineering in the BC, tele is soo much better. You have a free motion to move, and you know in the hard drops that your equipment is going to hold up. AT gear is pretty restrictive when it comes to climbing with skins, the stiff ski boots/restrictive motion of the AT binding limits your motion. Ohh an AT bindings have been known to blow right into pieces on heavy landings. On tele switch is not really an option, but your gear is going to hold up.
Ohh to the second part of your post, don't talk about bands in ski gabber....your just going to look like a tool. That is what the Media and Arts forum is for.
it depends on what you want to do, their is the fast and light mentality, with flexible and light boots, but you sacrifice on downhill performace and control, and then their is the complete opposite, so i think it depends on what you want to do in the Backcountry in either case of AT or tele
tele out of those 2, but if you still wanna be able to land switch or just prefer normal albine binders get a set of alpine treckers, then you get the plus side of AT bindings, w/ normal binders
it depends on what you're looking to ski. both have their benefits, but if you prefer one style to the other, go with it. i prefer tele, but that's just me. you can climb a lot steeper with AT, but the boots are more retricting.
The AT's add some weight but really they are not bad at all. They are great for steeps cause they have an adjustment on them that raises you boot level up. I have been using them for about 5 years now and they are excellent. They have held up through tons of abuse and have not caused me one problem.
BUT...if you prefer to tele just stay with that. The boots are more comfortable and you have less total weight on your feet. I have only tele'ed a few times but it sure would be nice to go for a hike and just have to throw some skins on.
OR...you could consider alpine bindings. The bindings lock down to the ski for the way down but you un click them and you have a liftable heel. I have used these a couple times and they are the best. Every patroller on our mountain uses them. The one big downside to them is that they are kinda pricey, but possibly worth it in the long run if you are hiking quite a bit.
