What is a mormon?

Is this some kind of diffent religion? ive heard that loads of good snowboarders are mormons but om not sure what they are?

my family used to be mormon but we just stopped going. its gay because there is so many rules. no caffiene, no smoking, no alcohol, no swearing, no dating till you are 18, and no living with your bf or gf until you are married. most of these things i am not old enough to effect me, but i can still see the gay morales and values they force on you

Mormons aren't bad, they are just extreme and excessive. The thnig about the wives is old and not a part of their religion anymore, it was stopped aroud 1900. Their rules suck ass... the worst of which is no sex until your married!
I'd never want to be a mormon, but i ain't really got much against them.

speaking as one, i must say that the excessive rules are quite irritating, i mean, seriously, i cant even be a crack head, a chain smoker, and alcaholic, have illigitimate children, std's, its hard... really.

as for the polygamy, its not been a part of the religion since the late 1800's, and if you were relly familiar with the church, and with the bible (old testiment) then it wouldnt seem that bizarre...there are still some polygamists that live in colonies in southern utah (if youve been throught southern and central utah this will not suprise you much) but they have no affiliation with the church. the religious teachings are a bit different than protestant or catholic christianity, but are in perfect accordance with biblical christianity, so call it what you want. as for us trying to convert people all the time, its true to an extent, and some of us are more obnoxious about it than others, but if you just tell em to get lost, they should leave you alone...(personaly id suggest you give em a listen, but its up to you) and yeah, they picked a pretty decent place to settle there in slc, but its not as good as california...the real promised land...

oh yeah, and it was started in upstate new york, not in utah... it started in upstate, and the small number of them at the beginning had to move from ny to pennsylvania to ohio to missouri, to illinois, and finally to utah, all cause people were trying to kill them all the time.

There's a grocery store that I go to that's owned by a mormon guy. So by the cigarettes are the nicarette packs and stuff to stop smoking. Which I find funny. But don't take this as an insult or mockery, cause I don't mean it to be.

mormons can go to dances. At least my friends who are mormon can...they went to homecoming and stuff. I mean, the church they go to even puts on dances for them...with strict dress codes of course. I didn't pass the dress code though when i went there=0/ I had a logo on my shirt, my jeans were too tight, and my belly showed.

^lol.... yeah but can they go out untill they r 16? im not sure... but at least the girl i know cant even go to a birthday party if a boy is there.. and by party i dont mean like crazy music and stuff like any party type thing... it was sad one of my friends who had a party had to un-invite all of the boys so that this girl could go...

so if palygamy(sp) is illegal, then why, when i drove through a hella isolated morman community in utah, there was a bunch of really cheap REALLY big houses, and all the families had about 12-13 kids and seemed to have several moms. explain that. accually, i think that was a multiple wive community but it was just islated and wierd. ohh well.

i just did explain it... they arnt mormons... there are a bunch of little colonies in central and southern utah where there are poligamists... but they arent mormons...

there was a special about them on 20/20 a long time ago and they definately referred to themselves as mormons....well at least the one they interviewed

There's nothing 'crazy' about Mormons. It's just a religion, and actually, it's a pretty cool one. Some of my close friends are Mormon, and so are some of the adults that I look up to. They're awesome people, and no weirder than any of my non-mormon friends. I go to church with my Mormon friends sometimes, and I've read the book of Mormon. I really don't understand why everyone seems to think Mormons are so weird.

To clear it up. POLYGAMISTS AREN'T MORMONS!! Some might say they are, but the church does not acknowledge them, and if you become Poly, you get excommutincated from the Church. Mormon Polygamy ended back in the 1800's. And with all the rules, if you think about it, they all have perfectly good explanations. The dating thing( which I think is stupid and my parents didn't enforce on me) is to help underage sex, pregnancy marriage. It is proven that couples who date before they are 16 are more likely to have sex than those who wait. Also the no Caffeine thing isn't true either. It is just some mormons veiws of the Word of Wisdom( No Drugs, No Body deformation(excessive piercing, tattoos) no strong heated beverages(tea, coffee)) besides not drinking caffeine or alcohol or smoking is very good for you. Whats wrong with being healthy? This may make me sound hypocritical because I do drink and smoke, but I was just clearing up the rules.

one of my good friends is a mormon and it kind of sucks your arent allowed to date and you cant do anything on sundays cause thats your day of rest. One cool thing for the guys though you can have mulitply wifes!!!

Im sorry if I sound hypocritcal when I type with the swearing and all. I reall don't consider myself an active member in the church, but my parents are both very religious, and it really pisses me off when people trash something they don't even know about.

ya guys, i'm sorry but you're all just going off sterotypes, i'm mormon to but i have also sort of gone off completely, well basically i'm not sure if i believe in god and all that but my family still is so i drink and stuff. but ya it is strict and really all my friends are so sheltered it's sad, it's kinda stupid in that sense, i mean if they'd lighten up a bit that'd be cool. I only read the first 4 or 5 posts, but everything I read was pretty much wrong. I have a whole bunch of friends who are morman. None of them have ever tried to convert me. It's true they cannot havea bf/gf if they are not also mormans, but that goes for Christians too. And maybe way back in the past, they believed in polygammy, but not anymore.

i have lots of buds that are mormon. But once you get close to them and their family, the family starts trying to convert you. I dunno, there's lots of stuff about mormonism that i dont agree with. For instance, they don't believe in the Trinity (Jesus, God and the Holy Spirit = 1), or the Virgin Birth. They think that the H.S. came down and like had sex with her. Oh yah, they also believe in this planet named Kolab where God has sex with his 'wife' to produce spirit children...so yah....uhh...yah...
