CO or Utah

okay so im getting surgery the second weekend in January, however before that, on my month long break from college, my dad wants to take me out west to " make me feel better".i was originally supposed to go to jackson, but the surgery cancelled that trip out of the picture. i have been to Utah skiing and love it. however he is giving me the option of colorado or utah. which one should i take/?

Utah. The quality of the terrain and the consistency of the snowpack crush Colorado. Quite a bit of Colorado skiing is horrendously flat, and if the late-fall/early winter storms fail to materialize, you are likely to be looking at a wretched snowpack until the storms roll back over the state in late March/early mid-April.


Tahoe or BC are also worth looking at if anything out West is an option.

Utah is great, dont get me wrong, but you dogged Colorado a lot man. theres lots of great places in CO. Stay away from the I 70 resorts (breck, vail, keystone, etc) and aim for off the beaten path. Steamboat, any of the Aspens, Telluride, Crested Butte, Silverton, and Wolf Creek are all worth hitting. it depends on what you want. if youre after deep powder but want to share it with millions of people and a lot of asshole film crews, and relatively few chill people then head for the Wasatch. if you want powder thats just a hair wetter but still just as good, and no crowds, and the chillest people you'll ever meet, then go off the beaten path in CO.

It depends on what she wants to ski, for park go to summit county, for powder/big mountain go to wolf creek, telluride, silverton - or get the best of both and go to Crested Butte

boulder is not a ski town. if anything its a bubble in colorado. if you want to get some good skiing in colorado and not deal with crowds then stay away from all the I-70 resorts. steamboat is pretty fun but you might also want to try telluride or the butte

if you're just going on vacation, go to utah. snowbird and alta pretty much torch most colorado mountains, especially the I-70 areas.

i could never ever live in utah, but if i had to pick a ski vacation destination from your two choices, it would be utah for sure, and i've lived in colorado my whole life.

Steamboat is awesome. The town is really sweet if you know the right people. Boulder is not a ski town, but its a good party town. Never been to Utah, but CO is sick.

I'd go to utah cause I got mad altitude sickness when I went to colorado during the summer. I would have to sit out from skiing for a day or two if I went to Colorado to ski for a vacation, which would be a terrible waste of time.

word up to that. i am so sick of all these fools acting like boulder is a ski town. No. You drive 2 hours to shitty skiing in loads of traffic. Doesn't quite meet the standards of a ski town. A ski town is Crested Butte. A ski town is Aspen. Both are sick. Go to either. And you won't see a bunch of Boulder-esque rich little kids in their audi's with ski racks either.

Not so much...

But Winter Park still gets big crowds from Denverites on the weekends.

I'll admit it- for just skiing, Utah is generally better than Colorado.

anyone that says colorado has never ski utah, or at least an epic day, ive skied over 20 feet of fresh in utah over the years, and i have never leaved there. and to who ever said that wastach gets crowded is dumb, colorado is like the florida of skiing every dumb fucker goes there

that is out of the question. #1... time. i have about 4 days to a winter break before i get surgery... #2.. heart surgery is expensive and we cannot afford at the moment to go all the way to austria. esp being in college and everything.

Definitely hit Utah for a ski vacation. It has better snow and beter Terrain. Alta is my favorite place to ski anywhere. I just wouldn't want to live in Utah.

so i live in alta for the winter and have to say the snow, consistant snow, and incrediably diverse mts. of the wasatch will beat colorado on any preplanned trip. and the big and little cottonwood canyons can give you any kind of skiing you want. brighton is all park. solitude never has anyone on the mt. alta is only for skiers, and snowbird has some of the best big lines to ski in the wasatch if you don't mind 45 min tram waits. but i'm partial to alta.

and ecski73, ive alredy been out seven times into the pow and its only october 20th! if you dont think colorado has snow then you obviously dont live here!

seriously, the only thing going for utah is powder. thats it. everything else is much better in CO.

i live in vail, and would love to ski alta and all that shit sometime. but to those that say colorado is flat, they are very wrong; sure, their is alot of flat skiing, but if your willing to hike, their is sick shit almost everywhere. anyone ever heard of the east vail chutes? but i would say Colorado for you, because you go to utah alot. just go to a chill place, like crested butte, or if your into park, some place like breck or buttermilk. and by the way, the snow is dryer in colorado than in utah. were in different zones or whatever, and colorado has to lightest snow, utah does have more though.

You also have a ridiculously flat pitch to your entire mountain. Your steepest trails take about 2 turns to get down.

ah ha ha ha ha ha the classic vail response when confronted about their obvious lack of steepness: "WHAT ABOUT EAST VAIL CHUTES LOL ?!?!" well you know what about the east vail chutes? Theyre not steep! Most of them have a mando air in, but its into a 45 degree at most bowl. you might have some smaller drops scattered around, but its just not that hard. ive skied there, ive seen it! now....try going to Mountain Quail at T-Ride, or Moosehead at CB, or any of the lines at Silverton. Huge, big mountain lines on a 50+ degree slope. If you fall on the east vail chutes youll rag doll for a little ways in the pow. if you fall at any one of the others, youll fuck yourself up big time!

how about this: im come rip the shit out of your east vail chutes sometime, and then you can come and try to keep up on a peak run to the bottom at CB. Then we'll talk about "steep".
