Life in Washington?

im from NY and im just wondering what life is like in Washington state, im trying to find out where to move if i decide to go out west. How is the skiing? where is the best place to live? is it expensive to live there? and any other pros or cons would be appreciated, thanks. oh and does it really rain as much in seattle as they say it does?

hmmm, this isn't really the most crazy scene place. West is usually reserved for the large resorts in california, and like Utah and Colorado (even though those really aren't west coast).

But the skiing can be great sometimes, but we are, in this state at least, limited to day use areas that are somewhat smaller in size. There is backcountry to choose from at pretty much any ski area, and parks should be taking off a bit more at a couple of the mountains (provided no slackers hold control). Snowfall is generall adequate (lets not mention 04-05). Sometimes we get a lot, like more than places such as Mammoth or Utah, but don't get much credit for it, but whatever. People seem to complain about heavy powder, and it is heavier than some places, but damn it can be good.

Living out in the Seattle area is expensive. I'm not sure what you are used to in NY, but I'm sure it would be high to pretty much anybody. It does depend on where you live though.

There is a pretty stong scene at here though. I mean there are more than twice as many posts in this regional than in the second most, which is probably new england or colorado.

Overall it depends on the qualities you are looking for. Big resortish like ski areas require you to go North, South, or East.

Oh, and it doesn't rain all the time. We got like an inch of rain all summer long, but we did have something like 30 consecutive days of rain this past winter.

true dat,grants right.....live in port orchard its nice and queit...but its far away from like all the "cool" places with good ski shops seattl is the place to be or find a town outside of seattle.

Well do not believ any crap about how nice and peace full it is on the "other side of the water" although a ferry comute is nice and better then rush hour if you work in the city it is fucking expensive and it takes you about an hour longer to get any where you want. Most of the people on this site live in the northern part of seattle (I think) and you could ask them what it is like up there, It is preety expensive if you live close to the city center, Don't live in tacoma, the skiing is far away and your car will be stolen. Bellingham might not be that bad. It is close to baker which gets on average about what Mammoth's records are. (around 600 inches a year I think) And you can always go up to Whistler. Other nice parts are you are near hood and Whistler in the summer.

come live in woodinville haha or just stay north east of seattle. away from the traffic and busyness but seattle is a dope city for sure. seattle isn;t known for its "skiing" other than like salt lake or denver. but the mountains are chill for sure. parks here arent extreme like whistler or park city but they're fun. you planning on going to school after you move?

If you ski seriously in WA you will be able to go to any mountian and rip it up, We get all conditions here, ice, powder, concreate, and everything else. Most people can't ski the cascade wet snow right off the bat though.

Seattle was rated in the top 3 ski towns in north america (maybe #1?? anybody remember?) by one of the ski mags, i think powder...anyways, its pretty chill out here. I can almost garuntee you'll have a much better skiing experience than you did in the East, that's for sure. I like living in the Northwest alot - if I ever move away from the northwest, it's because our seasons become too shitty and i need to migrate towards better snow. The scene is chill, lots of things to do in the city, lots of very liberal friendly people (especially noteefa).

Overall its a chill place to live, i like it

people love the snow in seattle, though many don't know how to drive in it. i should mention that the closest place to ski is an hour away, with the larger and typically better (though snoqualmie has a good park) are two hours away with traffic (stevens and crystal). then there's baker, which has some of the best and most difficult backcountry in the US, and is approximately 3 hours away from seattle, which is managable if you get up a little earlier as the drive isn't as busy. the snow is heavier, but you learn to love it, and the 3ft powder day is not a rarity (unless it's one of those years of which we do not speak of). also the heavy snow gives a more stable snowpack that builds up quicker and more than lighter snow, meaning that there'll still be decent snow around when everythings closing up, so you could get some backcountry in. we're only like 6 hours from hood and whistler (the border crossing may delay that), so it's not hard to get some summer snow in and it's easy to take a trip or two up to whistler in the winter. also the mountains here are very glaciated if you want to hike for your turns in the summer(Mt. Rainier is higher than anything in Colorado). the people are chill, so it's easy to meet people to ski with and such. and as you can see by our dominance over other regional posts.

i like it around north gate, that's where i take the ladies, i tend to have a little extra special sauce, it's above average size, but you have to count in a certain continent when estimating averages.

ah indeed, recently I've been toying with the idea of shaving outlines of little furry woodland creatures like rabbits and squirrels into my pubes as decoration.

Well the thing with Washington is that the snow is unpredictible, last year we were skiing chair accessed 2ft deep powder november 4th.  the year before it was the end of december. However for the last few years it has gone on untill april atleast. Last year it was untill May 7th. But you just never no with the PCNW.

there really is no set start and end. we had a wicked early start, first weekend of november last year. Usually we start late november, early december, but thats not always the case (04-05). And if there is enough snow, the season can basically go on for as long as you want it to (providing that you hike, or go to hood). But alpental stayed open into May. It was good stuff

Ah you see the problem is, My little furry creature being the satanic bastards they are wouldn't react well to being hunted and they would call upon their dark lord beazlebub to smite their predators. Our dark master would call forth a terrible hellfire and scorch the plains from whence our oppressors came. Basically, every season we end up on the edge of our seats hoping that the snow is going be/stay good...here's a great example of what I mean.

Season Outlook:
There has been information in the press that the Northwest Winter will be impacted by the El Nino that has formed (above average sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific). Some forecasts have indicted that we can expect a very poor year snow wise with this pattern. I have been asked to sort this out.

There are three major sources that I look at for seasonal forecasts: Climate Prediction Center- CPC (part of a US government agency), International Climate Research- ICR (think tank based at Columbia University), and Global Climate Center- GCC (private firm based in North Bend, Wa)

The CPC and ICR forecast for the Northwest for the November 2006 through January 2007 period is for above average temperatures and below average precipitation. This would not bode well for snow in the Cascades.

However, GCC has a different forecast. GCC is forecasting average to slightly above snowfall for the Cascades for November and December. Why is this forecast so different than the others? There are two reasons. One is this El Nino has started relatively late in the season so the typical impacts, dry pattern, would not start until later in the winter, say January 2007 or February 2007.

Another reason for the difference in the forecast is this is a weak El Nino so the impacts, dry weather, will be minimized.

Who is right?? I will put on money on the forecast of Global Climate Center (GCC) as their winter forecasts over the past several years has been right. GCC does say it is hard to tell what January and February 2007 will bring as that will be highly dependent if the El Nino gets stronger or not. We will keep you posted.
