when you put weight on the bad knee it feels like its sliding around. i would see a doctor rather than take the advice of anyone on this website, even though i did tear mine in the spring.

possible, but definately get it checked out immediately, nobody can decide if its torn without a knee exam, and even then they don't know for sure

hold your thigh with one hand and the top of your tibia with the other...put some pressure on your heel. Now try "sliding" your foot foward and back without taking it off the ground.
If it feels LOOSE or grinding, or popping or you throw up, you probably have a torn acl..

i dont think anyone on this site is a doctor, and if anyone here was, i imagine there advice would tell you to go to a doctor and get it checked out. it doesnt make you any cooler to ski with a torn acl or go on without getting an mri or surgery if thats what's in store for you. go to a doctor, its your knee...

no, for christs sake, do not go to a doctor. Not a GP anyway. If you have any means of seeing an orthopedic specialist, then thats fine, but your average GP does not know a fucking thing about musculoskeletal injuries. Its not their fault, its just that that shit takes a back seat to medical problems in their training.
Im a physiotherapist (physical therapist if your from the states). I could tell you all the symptoms, but without actually performing an examination, theres no way of diagnosing your problem.
Odds are you dont have an ACL rupture, because they are very traumatic and you would be unable to tolerate more than minimal weight bearing without feeling as if the knee is going to give way.
But you may have done ligamentous, cartilage or meniscal damage.
Go see a physical therapist or an orthopedic surgeon. A doctor will just give you a prescription and tell you not to ski.

I have done my knee twice. You will need to go to an orthopedic specialist. A PT cant do anything for you. A doc will most likely order an MRI for you. These are not 100% accurate (I beleive they are only approx 70%). The second time I did mine my MRI came back negative. The doc told me to wait do PT for it and see how everything is. After 5 months I went back and told him my knee was fucked. He said we can go in and take a look. Sure enough my meniscus was jacked, had a bunch of shit floating around, and had ACL damage (not a full tear but enough to require work)
I would go to some one who has done an ass load of knees who knows what is up. There are a ton of quacks out there and I have heard horror stories of what some of these goofballs do.
The most important thing is to communicate with your dock exactly what is up and how it feels. PT is also critical...and getting good PT is also important. I had a PT who wanted me doing open chain excersizes and Im like hold on let me call my doc. I did and he said NO FUCKING WAY!!! so I found a new PT. You only got 1 set of knees...so do your homework and good luck

here's my experience...
blew my acl.. could limp on it, but it hurt.. not unbearable pain though. it was super super swollen. then it got progressively better and two weeks later i decided i could try light skiing on it with my brace.
BAD IDEA!!
i didn't do anything, no fall, nothing and all of a sudden it gave way and one of my meniscuses was ripped off the bone and both meniscuses were torn. absolutely the worst, most painful experience EVER. couldn't move let alone try to put any sort of weight.
surgery was hell. i had it done a month ago as of yesterday, and it's still bad. still on crutches and can't do rehab yet either. next week hopefully, though...
good luck!

I just torqed my knee a bit about an hour ago, it's bruised and tender, but I can put pressure on it, extend it and walk on it fine and there isn't that much swelling. I will call a doc tomorrow if it continues, what was it like for anyone else right after they hurt their knee?
