New Ski Poles? Does it matter?

t's been quite a few years since I bought a pair of ski poles (my last were Scott World Cups from '96 or '97). Anybody have any thoughts on a new pair? And has pricing changed. This is probably the one piece of ski equipment that I have not followed since '96/'97.
I know that there are all sorts of new school poles from companies like Joystick and Armada and that Smith is no longer making poles, but has that much really changed since '97? And I'm not really interested in a pair of techie carbon fiber, trigger grip poles like the Lekis. Just a solid and light pair of aluminums will do me fine.

not any huge changes, in the end they al break anyway, some poles are lighter, and the carbon fiber or graphite ones hold up longer, but unless you can dish out the extra $$$ for carbon or care a bunch about weight, i'd suggest picking up a couple pairs at garage sales and saving money for something else, like skiing.

DUDE, it mos def matters. If you want to be cool or in the scene you have to get some either armada or joystick poles cause those are the only good ones. I heard that those poles dont break and that they actually make you a better skier cause they balance you automatically when you're on rails and they help you spin faster. Definitely worth the extra $100 you'll be paying for them.

Ha, I still have like 8 year old poles that I've had for 2 seasons. I painted them like a candy cane this year.

i go through a set of poles every 2 years. the last set i got were some cross max poles from salomon, and they were shit. The only good things about them were the lenght, and the grip. Im still using them, but they are bent to shit. My friend has the 1080 poles, which are pretty much the same thing, but he has had them for 5 seasons. It makes a difference. You could just buy an old pair of poles for under 10 bucks and have them last a few week-ends, or go all out and have them last you a few seasons. Its all up to you.
