Waxing Skis

Just got hold of some cheap skis for carving, think they've only been used on dry slopes and was wondering if I should wax them?
Will be using them at a local snow-dome and, unless I get some twins, I might take them to Austria in March, probably mostly groomers and some pow.
So what do you guys think? Should I wax and if so, what would be best?

wax is divided into what temperatures they should be ridden at so there is like cold weather wax 10-25degrees and all the way up to warm weather wax which is like 40-55degrees so just get some wax for the conditions you'll be riding in

close..........wax is actually divided into tempatures of the snow you ride on, which is very different from the tempature of the air. What you want todo is get a mid grade wax (ushually purple) and use that. Change the wax grade for massive weather changes that would indicate a massive change in snow tempature

or just use all temp wax. It is much easier.

tuning your own skis is a plus, but i wouldnt just jump right into it, its a semi-artform and takes a little bit of patience and skill, so i would just get em tuned at your shop vs. spending cash on an iron, scraper, file, wax, ect.

i have waxed hundreds of skis in my life and id say that you should probably think about putting some travel wax on the skis. that will prevent oxidation and keep the skis in good shape. just put a layer of wax on the skis and when you are done traveling scrape it a few times and go skiing, then the remaining of the wax will just fall off. average waxes are usually 14-25 farenheight (sp) so maybe put that on

Use cold and hard wax, like -10 to -15C. Indoor snow is not cold but it's really abrasive so harder wax is better. Scrape it off before it cools and hardens entirely or it's really hard to scrape. Don't use warm or universal - it'll all be gone within a few runs. Most guys I know don't even wax for indoor. Some guys swear by theat Zardoz teflon stuff but that lasts about 2 runs too really.

England actually. Not too many high-peaks around here :D Possibly some reasonable skiing in Scotland though.

So it's not just a case of rubbing wax on and skiing then...
I have to heat the wax, then scrape it.
There are plenty of waxes on ebay with scrapers think I'll have a look at them.
