Absolutely DUMPING in CB right now. 6" at my house this morning, 2 feet up high - will post pics as soon as you can see anything!! Damn i love Colorado!!
Yeah there is an incredible amount of snow up high.
We've been planning a dual birthday party/kegger for two of my good friends to take place today at our hut on the divide (it's at 11,100 ft) between Winter Park and Eldora for about a month. There is up to 3 feet of snow up there right now. It is a 5 mile up hill hike to get to the hut. Of the people that are going, three of us (including myself) are wilderness instructors/guides, but we are thinking that it might be too dangerous to try to bring the 20ish people we were planning on bringing up there tonight into the storm. Two more feet of snow is expected overnight, so we are talking whiteout blizzard scenario. It may not be worth it tonight.
The good thing is that with this much snow up high it will create a pretty decent base for future snowfall once it settles. Chances are the stuff down low, like in town at Vail will melt off in the next week, but this stuff up high will probably stay till next July.
And for those of you wondering, even with this much snow, it is still to early to start skiing backcountry in the area around the hut. There needs to be about 4 feet of packed base before you don't have to worry about fallen trees, big rocks, etc.
