so i'm a senior and the time to start seriously thinking about colleges has come. now, so far, the schools I want to apply to are CU boulder, st. michael's, uvm, u of utah, umass, and maybe unh.
now, my mom gets upset/mad whenever we discuss schools. I'm the youngest in my family. my older brothers have all gone to well respected private universities. the schools I'm looking at, compared to where they go, aren't as 'good' (well, this is what my mom thinks anyway). anyway, I Have said a lot of nothing, but is anyone else out there extremely annoyed by the fact that their parents are hugely impacting where they are going to college? I mean, yes understood they are paying for it, so they should have their say, but only to an extent. I can't stand it that everytime I bring up boulder and utah my mom goes 'you're not going there.' it drives me crazy. even now I get so mad thinking about how my mom is telling me I can't go where I want to.
someone give me another point of view or story. i'm so tired of the east coast

You should consier UC Davis if you love skiing. An hour and 45 minutes from tahoe. Its also a more competitive school than UNR, with no out of state tuition fees.
All of you complaining about your parents not letting you decide, shut the hell up! Out of state tuition is ridiculous compared to instate tuition. Your parents would be spending nearly 20,000 dollars more at some places each year because of out of state fees. Just for the 4 years of undergrad they would be shelving out 80,000 extra dollars of their hard earned money just cause you want to go to a "party school" and will probably slack anyway. If you want to ski I respect that but there are plenty of places to go other than Boulder or Utah. If you're filthy fucking rich I say go for it but otherwise no. Unless you live somewhere real shitty like Iowa I'd say just stay in your state for your college unless you plan on paying for it yourself or have a scholarship.

i know that, but i've looked at davis and i really can't see myself there. i need a little bit more around me, and as far as a town goes, boulder is good, san francisco is a city with everything, as is LA, and Reno is just close to home and friends and skiing. And...unless UC Davis is completely different from all the other UC's I probably wouldn't be able to get in.

umass is pretty dope. not toooo close to skiing but sweet deal for in-state, good school, and loads of stuff to distract you until it snows. and the schoolwork can be as hard or as easy as you wanna make it. I applied to UVM too but it is hella expensive for what it is. not that its a bad school, if I lived in VT probably woulda gone there. But if you live in MA umass is dope. And it's like 50 minutes to mt snow and a bit more to like okemo and killington and shit, which is at least an improvement over the white mountains I was rockin last season. And for what brad said about other amherst schools, unless you're really smart A) it will be mad hard to get in and B) you'll be burried in your books while I'm out skiing. And my friend who goes to amherst college is thinkin about transferring to the commonwealth college at umass...

USF is really chill and fairly easy to get into. my friend is going there and loves it. plus it's only 3 hours from tahoe.

i'm in the same situation as you... I really liked boulder and luckily my parents support it. i havent seen uvm but i have heard good things and im gonna apply there and take a look. also i think im gonna apply to utah, which would pretty much be a safety. utah seems sick locationwise, but i have heard so much shit about it i dont even know if its worth it. i guess college really is what you make of it, but I have heard many negative things about the U and i don't know if its worth applying.
