so i'm a senior and the time to start seriously thinking about colleges has come. now, so far, the schools I want to apply to are CU boulder, st. michael's, uvm, u of utah, umass, and maybe unh.

now, my mom gets upset/mad whenever we discuss schools. I'm the youngest in my family. my older brothers have all gone to well respected private universities. the schools I'm looking at, compared to where they go, aren't as 'good' (well, this is what my mom thinks anyway). anyway, I Have said a lot of nothing, but is anyone else out there extremely annoyed by the fact that their parents are hugely impacting where they are going to college? I mean, yes understood they are paying for it, so they should have their say, but only to an extent. I can't stand it that everytime I bring up boulder and utah my mom goes 'you're not going there.' it drives me crazy. even now I get so mad thinking about how my mom is telling me I can't go where I want to.

someone give me another point of view or story. i'm so tired of the east coast

I am going to University of Denver. And if my kid wanted to go to Boulder I'd be a little wary....have you ever been to a party there? Crazy shit.

Just get a good scholarship and tell your parents to shove it.

I'm applying to U of Denver, UVM and Bozeman.  All are good schools and have great skiing.  UVM and DU are especially good schools too.

two things:
boulder is just a college that is by the mountains, their parties arent any different than UW Madison, Santa Barbara, Ohio State, Austin, etc. its the same beer and booze and weed (kinda) as everywhere else in the country. they just happen to throw them exceptionally well.

be sure you arent trying to attend these schools just cause your mom doesnt want you to. i know it wont seem like that but sometimes our brains work that way when talking colleges.
all of those are good schools- college degrees are what you make of them

I peeped DU in july. just wasn't some place I could see myself going. and I've heard about crazy boulder parties; when I was there I talked to a local about a party that happened the night before and a girl got raped there. not the greatest thing to hear when you're about to go tour a school, but it surprisingly didn't phase me. boulder's dope. cu seems fun. and coloRADo is radical. I dont knowwwwww

I agree with you. but how can you say Utah is a 'good' school when the graduation rate is shit? this is something my mom asks me and I can never think of an answer to it.

My parent didnt affect my choice at all.  they suggested placed so i looked but they didnt care where i went. im the oldest in my family so i dont have anything to live up to.  My dad helped me with deciding by taking me to school or tours and stuff.  I could pick anywhere and it would have been fine, on the other hand i couldnt pick anywhere beause im dumb/

whats the best way to do this? i only play waterpolo, so i dont think ill be getting an athletic scholarship, but i need one for college

i feel you completely. my parents say i have to go to school in VA (which if i end up doing i might kill myslef. not even joking)  i hate VA more than  anything but my parents say i have to go there for the in state tuition.  this is bullshit since were not poor at all. my dad is just saving up for the 50 ft boat he wants to live on after he retires.  i want more than anything to go to u of utah , but they say absolutely not unless i get a scholarship.  i would even love uvm but they say no unless i get some kind of scholarship. this is also gay because they pay 19 thousand a yearr for my sisters highschool. i need a scholarship soo bad

yea umass has a very good business school, if you go there, all those school are very good schools and you should tell your mom to shut it cause she doesnt know what shes talking about.

meh i have to pay my way, which had a strong infulence on where i ended up, but im lucky the local is a strong ranked school and only an hour from the mountains. Our Business school (which im in) just got ranked 21 in north america i think, i dont think it was the world but it might have been, anyway it was a big deal. I chose to stay though because i couldnt afford some of the schools i wanted to attend. (I go to the University of Calgary)

Im currently at in Ontario and my parents were just like Dont fuck up your future son and are you sure this is what ya want I said I wont fuck up my future, How will i ski if I have no money and 2 yes this is what I want so theyre like ok, have fun and get good grades, lol

if i were you the very LAST thing that i would do is what everyone on here is telling you to do, that being to tell your mom to "shove it". instead get her informed about the schools that you want to attend. find the program that you want to get into and research the schools and see if they have the program you want. then tell your mom, "look mom, _____ school has a great ______ program". then get her to take a trip and a tour to the schools you want to go. parents have a hard time saying no when they see how truely excited their kids are about something.


and about getting a scholarship there are literally thousands out there on the internet. i researched for a while online and found well 50 that i could apply for when i was a senior in high school. i got $1500 each semester from stupid places online, like the alfred s. simon award, or something like that.

yeah but... a lot of these schools (well maybe just cu and utah) don't have good statistics. utah has a pitiful graduation rate and is mostly a commuter school. now, I dont really have a problem with either of these things...but for my mom their a huge deal. so when she says utah is a shitty school...look at its graduation rate, I have nothing to come back with.

well maybe you should give more weight to the fact that they are paying for it.

Go out and take initiative and apply for a bunch of scholarships and stuff, maybe that would show them that you are concerned about college, but that you really do want to go to U of U or whatever.

ya im in the same situation kinda... everyone is telling me to apply to like U of Illinois and Notre Dame and telling me Colorado State or Boulder wouldnt be as good for me...But my parents are cool about it now so im not too worried...I cant decide between Boulder and colorado st but im leanin towards colorado state cuz its cheaper unless i get a good scholarship from boulder

i would come back with something like "you should have more faith in me than to just fall in with everyone else" tell her that you will perform better at a school that you are really happy being at rather than a school that she forced you to go to. make it known that you will be unhappy at a school where you will not be having fun. and let her know that there is more to fun than just partying, drinking, skiing etc. even though we know that there isn't anything else to fun besides that.

my parents are pretty chill about whre i go, although they said they wuldnt be stoked if i ended up at U of Utah so tahts my uber backup school. they seemed to have resigned themselves to the fact taht i want to go somehwere close to skiing so i have Pitzer, DU, and Colorado college all lined up

but.....

my mom only wants me to go to school on the EC, and is strongly fighting me everytime i consider U of U or westminster, (she worked for mitt romney and thinks mormons are evil and the entire state of utah is as well)

she wants be to go to BC (boston college) as a legacy, Umass as a legacy or UVM.

I was in a somewhat similar situation last year. My parents were a little surprised when, given my gpa and acts, I decided I want to go to the U. However, they were very open to my reasoning and know that I love to ski so it wasn't that hard of a push. I suggest dropping some of the reasoning that I did:
- college really is what you make of it. you can go to dartmouth, never go to class, fail out, and not get a degree. you can do the same thing at utah (or anywhere else). you can also go to any school, work hard, go to class, get involved, and come out well rounded and with a degree at any school
- might as well be somewhere that you enjoy. if you love skiing and really want to be somewhere that will allow you to do so, why not do that? sure I could've stayed in jersey, gone to a better school, and been miserable, but there's no point in doing that.
- if they're worried about skiing taking up too much time and you losing focus on the academics, tell them that there will be temptations anywhere. any school, any state, any time, there will always be something more fun to do than study and go to class. however, part of going to college is growing up and learning how to deal with. a lot of time, the fun stuff is tempting but doesn't pay off in the long run. so work your ass off in the morning/during the week, and ride in the afternoon/weekends.

Again, my parents didn't really put up a fight, but if your mom is really against it, some good reasoning may help change her mind.

why not do a year or two of university/college near home so that you get to learn school life first and keep your parents happy (plus it might be better for you marks wise)... then take some time off or transfer to the other schools out west so that you can ski?  moving away for school can be hard.. moving across the country - doubly hard.  Having a hard time at school will bring the temptation of ditching to ski even easier and then your mom gets to say "I told you so" when your marks drop further.
It sounds like your parents just want what they think is best for you

I'm going to Cal Poly Pomona right now (southern california - an hour from where I grew up, which is right by Mt High, a smallish ski resort - makes it RATHER convenient), going into my 4th year, it's a decent school, for business, graphic design, agriculture, architecture, and above all, engineering. So really, it depends on what you want to do where you want to go - if you're a big partier, your interests... if you have no idea, just poke around at different places and see if you like the looks of the campus. I know parents do have a big impact on where you go, but if you know what you want to do, and you're like, look mom, this school (wherever it is) has a high reputation for (fill in the blank) and that's what I want to do. Now, if all you want to do is ski and then get a degree in communications or something, hospitality management, by all means man, go to Colorado, Utah, or maybe somewhere in Oregon, or, somewhere in N California where you're semi close to Mammoth. :)

I see your problem, but just because utah has a shitty gratuation rate doesn't mean you're gonna be the one pulling it further down. and it seems you won't because if your mom is that concerned about your choice of college I'm pretty sure she has taught you a few things about the importance on doing well at school. I know utah isn't the best uni, but I'm thinking of taking an exchange year there next year (07/08) because I want take an exchange year (because we have the possibility to) AND I need to combine my studies with skiing. if I would have to go to school/college someplace where I couldn't ski I'd just do shitty at school as well, because I can't really concentrate if I can't ski for a change from studying. just try to explain to your mom that it is important for you to be able to practice your skiing (assuming that's why your considering these colleges) while going to college. maybe offer to take some extra classes if they think that's better, after all they're paying for it so I can see why they would want to influence it for the better.

We rock the shit at CU. I got into 6 schools that are arguably "better" than CU, but in the end I did what was going to make me happy and my parents supported that. If you want to live in Colorado after graduating college, go to CU or DU. End of story.

utah isnt that great, except for the skiing, which is why your mom doesnt want you there. CU  is completely misunderstood by parents because of the alcohol related death that happened recently. Most of those had to do with shitty friends, and fucking retards. Boulder is like top 50 public universities. Business programs is excellent.

if any of you are having issues with tuition, and are smart, check out mcgill. its like the same as in state tuition in the US.

haha conor I would but PSU isn't even an option for me. if I were to go there my parents would not pay for it. plus the dorms are pretty dirty.

thanks for all your input. I'm gonna chill out for a few days, then talk to my parents more about it and try to explain things more clearly for them. well, for my mom anyway. my dad wants me to go to colorado then he can come out and visit and go skiing.

I'm basically in the same position as you. I went and checked out CU in february and loved it. my other choices are USF, UNR,because it's close to home, and Loyola in LA. I'm looking into Oregon too. My mom knows nothing about college and she doesn't really care,she says it's what you make it, which I totally agree with. My dad hates the thought that i'd end up at Boulder. But, if you end up at CU, hopefully I'll see you there.
