First of all.. you really don't want to live there if you can avoid it. yes lots of parties. loud and smelly.

find a house with some friends.. living in staff is like living in a shitty dorm with shitty rules, shitty RA's, and shitty aussies.

Smells like vomit/sex/BO. Rooming with 3 other random people. Good luck getting to sleep if you work weird hours. Very small rooms, and you're looking at 325$ and upwards a month. For 450$ and up you can get a decent room in a 4 bedroom house in say... alpine, if you're lucky. If you come late in the season, or in nov after most of the work force has arrived look at spending 600+ a month for a closet. Or shared room accom, aussie style. Last year I was looking around and someone wanted 650$ for a bed in a room with 2 other people, in a house of 7. Yeah... Riiiiight.

Come early, start renting in june/july. It's when prices drop and you'll have a lot more options. Room with friends, or come here, work a month, make friends and move in together. Getting shoved in a small room with 3 other strangers of whom you may not get along with too well isn't that much fun. Then again, if you're tight on cash and don't care, go for staff.

Regardless of where you stay, there will be partying. It's Whistler after all.

seriously i didnt want to say it but thats really what it's like. I didn't want to ruin the fun you may not have had. lol.

Team has it right. If you don't care which you probally do it's not for you. If your asking all these questions and inquiring your probally not ready to handle that kind of lifestyle.

The best thing to do and i'll say it in support of "team". June/July is the best time to rent. Spend a year here. It's great and even greater if your happy home. 2 bedroom places are ideal. Two people is the best. I've been here for more then a year now and i've been through several places and i've found my own place with a good friend. Theres nothing better then finding an honest hard working friend to hang out with after a fun day at work or on the hill. Anything more then 2 people get's complicated and sometimes fustrating.

I'm not homosexual or anything so don't get any ideas but if you live with the opposite sex it can either go one way or the other (bad/good). If you live with the same sex and assuming your both hetero theres little to worry about and easier to make faster and better decisions when it comes to living ect.

Secondly.

Really concider where you want to live in whistler. Whistler is small but not that small that you don't have a choice when it comes to accomadation. It all depends on how much money you make and where you will be working. Don't work in function if you live in emerald. lol's. If you don't want to go through the hassel of being fired for being late ect. Live close to work. We are all here to have fun and enjoy whistler but whistler is expensive and a job is key. Nurture your job as you would your child. Be realistic! If you can manage to keep your job or find something you love you'll enjoy it more when you've seen a season or two or maybe a few months if you've worked hard and been a good employee. You'll make new friends and gain respect. You'll have soo many new friends you'll run out of contact space on your cell phone.

thats all there is to it. Real simple like. Basically pretty fundamental stuff here. I don't mean to lecture. but man you'd be surprised how people live out here. It is sometimes pretty pathetic.

hey guys thanks for this, i alreay knew some stuff about how shitty the living is up their, i just wanted some realistic comments from people who have experienced it. and i was planning on going up there in october right before the job fair, but i guess i will modify my plans, i probably wont be able to get up their until early september, so do you know if thats too late to find good housing? unfortunetly i dont think any of ym friends are coming with me, maybe for 2 months but thats about it. i know lots of people that live up their though, shoudl be ok

yeahhh well ive got money saved, so i could probably afford a place if the rent was maybe $850 a month. i think im going to try the housing for a little while and look everywhere for somewhere else to live. i got a place by alta lake i can maybe rent with friends, kinda pricy though.

it's not. but i wouldnt leave it that late. Don't waste your time or money at staff. Live with friends and pitch for rent. staff is absolutely last resort.

find a place in june or something for the first of sept. but the summers here are fun move here in june. It'll give you a chance to get things ready for the winter and put aside money for all the new gear you want. You'll also phase out of the whole drinking thing in the summer. You dont want to spend too much in the winter, Everything is expensive in the winter.

ya theres no way i can go there for the summer, im travelling with my dad and everything is already set. anyways ive still got almost a year to think about it. im pretty sure im going to head up their in sept and find a job in retail and stay at the house, and then find new accomidations because i dont know anyone i can share with asd of now. i was looking in pique magasine just to see price ranges, and there seem to be lots of reasonable stuff this time of year. ill let ya know if i need anymore help. thanks for everything

lots of good advice here. but you need to have a house before you can get a job. thats the way it works, dont fight it.

do not work for intrawest. the wages are shit and do not cover living expenses. all the tales you hear about people working 3 jobs and jsut scraping by are because they work for intrawest (and pay too much for coke). does $8.83 sound good for retail? no? then dont work for intrawest.

cashier at a grocery store pays $9.20 or something near that. wages are approximately 15% higher here then in the valley. cost of living is more expensive to. however if you are smart and prepared you can actually save money here. OMG!!!!!!!!

get a high end retail position, something with comission, or make yourself valuable to them and ask for a raise. right now there are 5500 less employees then there are jobs. use that to your advantage.

move up early, thats the best thing. get anyjob you want and you can pay less than $400 for a room in a house.

You should go around town and announce this to everyone you see! There is not only a lack of employees here, there's also a lack of quality employees. Not all employers are perfect and great to work for, but find a job that you like for an employer that respects you and do your job well! You're going to start at the bottom wage of wherever you end up working, but take pride in what you do and the possibilities can be endless.

sorry, i have to say that not all intrawest jobs pay low. there are some that are great. and i must agree, remember we're all here to have fun. everyone doesn't need to try and prove something when they omve up here. there's a little false front a lot of locals, and especially "short term locals" have that should be ignored. Everyones relatively chill so relax and have a good time when you come here

How come pretty much every time someone posts something even slightly negative about Intrawest or whoever the fuck runs whislter now that Intrawest sold or whatever, they end up posting some sort of half-assed apology within a couple of hours?

I hear that lots of Australians live in staff. And nothing good has ever come out of Australia. Except Steve Irwin. So I'd say avoid staff at all costs, unless you want the aussie AIDS.

You see i moved here about a year and a half ago. I had experience in retail and marketing. I got my job the very first day here in whistler on the spot. I've stuck it through and worked hard now i'm the boss.

whos to say you cant do it with intrawest. you'll have to be patient. im nto a big fan either of intrawest. whatever job you get you should allways work hard at. The best way to show an employer you hate there guts is to learn everything you possibly can off them and be there best emlpoyee. Then leave.

for the record i'd say a job is more important then housing. and if your like me i allways do the easy stuff first. i'd get a job first then ask my emlpoyer if they know of anywhere to live. Then if they are rich they'll rent you one of theirplaces. haha... it's agood plan works well.

actually simon. i still am not too fond of intrawest jobs. i had a shitty experience with them and their crappy ass wages. then one store did a big favour for me and offered me a good job with a better wage. i couldnt take it because of the timeframe and everything. at first i forgot about that job when i made the other post, but i figured i shouldnt make such a blanket statement when someone did something liek that for me. i will still state 8.83 per hour with no commission is slave labour and absolute crap

Ok, along with other people here, I've spent a good time in whistler.

I went there alot, every summer for glacier skiing and training camp since my early moguls days. Last summer I actually drove down with in mind to stay a little longer, ifnd some work...etc...

Lucky was I, found a good and cheap place to stay at first, got there in may.

Chilled out, visited, etc... skiing started, friends got in town. Yet, no Job. but lots of fun. Thanks to the big chunk of cash I had when got there. then, thanks to a good landlord, and thanks to Visa as well. I ended up getting a job for a store in the 4 season in august when all friends were gone but I decided to stay longer.... 4 Seasons is exactly the place you want to work at. They pay fairly well, and you have access to staff cafeteria, free when you work, cheap when you dont work, but damn, the best food I ever had.

1- do no say " I will get there in september and see what happens" You will, yes YOU WILLL get screwed.

calculate this, let say you find a cool place for 400-500 in june, and get it for a year. 12 X 500=6000

If you get there in september, you skipped 3 months, but wont find something decent under 650-700
650X9= 5850
Just rent earlier even if you arent here... even july will do it, and save you 500... but in the long run, you will more than just that anyways...plus, getting there in the summer will get you more job opportunities, and you will be able to choose where you live and where you work, instead of getting "What's left".
