i thought the movie was cool, but i definitely wouldn't say it was a great or even good movie. RANT COMING: A movie is supposed to be like an emotional rollercoaster, manipulating you to feel happy then sad then happy again. Boondock Saints tried to, but kind of failed, mostly because of the character Rocko. The thing is, no matter how hard I tried, I just didn't like Rocko. They tried to make him out as the funny character who the serious characters like, even though he sometimes gets on their nerves. But Rocko just came off as a spineless, cowardly asshole who only stood up when he had stronger friends to get his back. He's a also a hypocrite, the way he yells at his girlfriend for being a slut, yet he ironicly is her boyfriend, until he shot her cat (which was hilarious btw). So back to the emotional rollercoaster: The filmakers needed to have a point in the movie when our emotions plummeted. All the while we are getting more and more caught up in the excitement of the plot and the brother's success, and the filmmaker should have had this lead up to a catastrophy, which the protagonists recover from in a tour de force. They tried to make a catastrophy by having the Russian mob boss kill Rocko. We are obviously supposed to lament Rocko's death, and thus hate the man who killed him, but frankly, I couldn't care less that Rocko died. I thought he was a dick, and I couldn't identify with the way the brothers so fervently sought justice against the Russian. What we needed as an audience, was for one of the characters we loved, to die, and the characters we love in Boondock Saints are the brothers. Had the filmakers had the Russian mobster kill one of the brothers, then we would be filled with anger and hatred and relish in the revenge exacted upon the killer. Instead, we're just left with the feeling that the Russian Don probably deserved to die, but I just didn't feel the swooping triumph that I should have felt as they delivered their final blow. Boondock Saints goes to show that too much of a good thing really can ruin a movie with serious potential. *Whew*
