Getting into filming

i'm about to get my first camcorder and i had some questions:

what kind of computer do i need to transfer/edit MiniDV movies? Will new computers all be compatible?

Once i've used up a miniDV tape, can i transfer it to the computer then erase it and re-record on it?

If my computer isn't compatble how can i install the neccasary stuff? How much does it cause?

-al new computers will have appropriate software

It depends. If your camcorder has firewire/usb out then you'll be set. If not then your gonna need an adapter that takes the red/white/yellow cables. Something like this

Oh yeah I also say screw any software that comes on your pc. Get Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 it's the shit and if you need it I can show you how to get it.

if you're getting into filming, then I would look at a 16mm camera.

But seriously,

Get a mini dv camera. They're small and cheap. Try to get as much OPTICAL zoom as you can. You'll need to buy a firewire cable too. If you go to Best Buy the people that work there should be knowledgable enough to direct you to the right stuff. Don't let the people at best buy talk you into a DVD camcorder. They're garbage.

Your computer will probably already have a fiirewire port so you're good there. Start off just using windows movie maker or iMovie if you have a mac. Both of those programs should be preinstalled. If you find that your computer doesnt have a firewire port they can be purchased for around 30 dollars.

Its on all computers with xp. If someone you don't have it you can download it for free from microsoft. You'll find it in Accessories then Media Tools or something like that.

Yes actually it does. It also makes drop outs (times when the tape just kinda spazzes or gets like mosaic-y) much more likely.

it actually does....if you're not that serious then its not noticable so for your first camera you can tape over old tapes

well chances are you can tape over it 1-2 times before you notice dropped frames etc, but there's always the risk. You coulud even have a brand new tape that craps out on you if your heads are dirty.

Right, I guess thats true somewhat, but if your in any way serious and taping something important its just not worth the risk. So in other words if your just filming your bro session the park jump, and do a trick he has on lock its probably aight but if your filming tanner hitting chads you better use new tapes.

it doesnt hurt the quality. period. but it does make it .0001% more likely to have dropouts. dont worry about it man

You can either DL the trial off download.com and then get a serial for it or u can use bittorrents and dl it off there and then get a serial.

You can get droped frames and artifacts. It's not worth the risk. tapes are cheap.

It technically shouldn't reduce the quality at all. It's digital. Its just rewriting information on the tape. Its the same principle as overwriting a file on a computer.

this is what can happen if you re-use a tape...it doesnt happen often but it sucks if its a shot you really want. it only lasts for about 3 frames but it is noticeable

exactly. that was the question. i clearly stated that i understood it makes dropouts a little mor elikely, but the QUALITY IS NOT AFFECTED
