Well I gotta outta class about 12:40 or so, and was heading down the hallway towards the stairs to go to the atrium (open area of school), and all of a sudden I heard a fairly loud bang. The first thing that came to mind was that it was some idiot that had some fireworks or some shit, since I've personally fired many guns and rifles (I'm in the military) and the sound I heard really did not sound like a firearm. Then came the screaming from downstairs, and a second and third bang. The round from the second shot came 5 feet from where I was standing, hitting a wall behind me.
Obviously at this point I knew something wasn't right, and immediately yelled for people to get down or to get the fuck out if they could. A few more shots went off and one hit a girl who was on the stairs heading to the 4th floor (I was on the 3rd, shooter on 2nd). She started screaming and panicking, like everyone else was, but it didn't look like she was able to move, maybe out of fear, maybe out of injury, that I'm not sure of. At this point I didn't really know what to do, because running out to help the girl would put me in direct sight of the shooter, but luckily someone came from the 4th floor to help her get away.
There were a few people left near me, a couple who were frozen in fear and one who was shoved down from the crowd, so I helped her up and told the other people to move and went towards the closest exit. When I got outside it was chaos, just imagine a school of 8000 people all frantically rushing out at the same time. There were people crying, people calling friends seeing if they were alright, cops trying to get control of everything, and I saw one guy who had been shot in the stomach that was lying on the ground with first responders helping him out.
It was fucked up, within 10 minutes there must have been 50+ cop cars and 15+ ambulances, along with a few swat units. The first thing I did was call my family and friends to let them know everything was alright and to make sure they were not hurt. Unfortunately one of my good friends was shot, but luckily he was hit the arm and should be out of the hospital by Friday. Not everyone was as fortunate though, so my prayers go out to them and their families.
Not only were there physical injuries, but I'm sure today will mentally scar many people, as students witnesses some shit that nobody should have to go through in their lives. Hopefully we can learn from events like this and preven them from happening in the futur.
