because they are at higher altitudes in the mountains and its always colder up there. Also when clouds are forced up and over mountains they drop precepitaion.

I disagree, I bet some places in the North Midwest get almost as much if not more...I know where I ski we recieve more than Aspen/Snowmass...just to name one.
BUT, head to 6000 + feet and you end up with quite a bit more snow....for reasons that someone already mentioned.

in a nutshell: warm, moist pacific air gets dragged up over the mountains by the prevailing westerly winds. As this happens, the warm air cools and moisture condenses out of it in the form of rain or snow, much like a cold glass frosts over when its placed in a warm room.

Hardly ever cold in Oregon cept at the mountain maybe...but it rains a ton, making snow on the mountain.

Yeah, Alpentalik is so right about the cascades. High temperatures are barely ever lower than 20F or so in the ski areas. Thats why we are known for 'cascade concrete.' We get a ton of snow, but also get our share of rain on the mountains.

my house is at 8000 feet. top of the mountain is over 11,000. that might have somethin to do with it
