Anybody know approximately how much it costs to ship skis using UPS or USPS? Looking to buy skis and the seller has to ship from Alaska to Alberta. I did a search and the concensus is that it costs about $40. What about customs and taxes? I think UPS standard covered those costs right?

im pretty sure customs and taxes are charged externally by local authorities, not shipping companies..

I just shipped pocketrockets from Montana to B.C. and it was $130, no joke there. Be careful, make the package under 90" long, and use as little carboard as possible.

i beleve that when shipping from the US to Canada usps is better cuz they dont have the huge brokerage fee the ups has. im not 100% sure tho so someone please confirm this
I remember getting something sent from NY to Toronto and i ended up paying an extra 50buck on top of the shipping cost

I ship UPS and FEDEX because my shipping store, not a ups or fedex outlet, covers the fees. And when you go UPS or FEDEX you spend $100, you are insured to $1000. USPS without insurance is the worst, they lost a check of mine, a bag coming home from whistler, never saw shit out of that, UPS handles the package all the way across the border.

Thanks for the replies. So for about $50 or so, skis can be shipped over the border using USPS? What about the customs declaration? I've heard that if you mark it "commercial sample," then they usually let it pass without any duties or taxes.
I know from experience that marking the package as "gift" doesn't do jack squat, especially when they figure the value of the item is more than $50.

yeah i sold a paintball tank to someone in cananda for like 150 and i insured it for 180. it costed me about 15 bucks but the kid who got it got hit with about 100 dollars in duties. then i sold something else to someone in canada and he said mark it as a gift. he too got hit with about 60 bucks in duties. so i no longer ship out of state.

I think if you mark it as a commercial sample, they can't tag you with duties. That or mark it as "other" and call it a warranty.
