Sony vx2000

how does it compare to cams like the panasonic ag-dvc30 and gl2? would you reccomend it over those 2 or should i go with something else?

Aight, first off a lot of it is personal opinion on the look of the video. I had the same choices as you, and i got the dvc30. The gl2 is supposed to be meh, not horrible but not the best. The vx2000 is supposed to be great, but i didnt want to buy a used camera, so i went with the dvc30 brand new for 1549.its totally sick, solid and really great quality. do some research before you decide, and check out skateperception.com

The VX2100 is very similar to the VX2100,the VX2100 is better in low light compaired to the VX2K.Two of my friend have the DVC30's and personally I dont like them.

If you want the whole skater/party footage/fisheye look, then get Sony. If you want the whole filmy look, get the GL2. The GL2 sucks at skater-like filming and vice versa.

if you want something that fucking owns both, then get Panisonic (or the DVX anyway).

You post in every camera thread. I find that humorous. I have a vx1000 and fucking love it. If I had the money I would have gone with a dvx. Personally I think sony and panasonic are the best video cameras you can buy. The only problem with the vx is the lcd, which I don't use anyway, and low light performance is lacking. I'd compare it to a gl2 at night. The 2100 is the best low light you can get and the 2000 isn't far behind. The manual settings on the vx are still better than the 2000 or 2100 though.

You have no clue what you are talking about.GL2s are awsome cameras if you know how to set them up the right way,the heads are so small on them tho,therefor you need to get them clean like every 3-4 months unlike sony and panasonic which have huge heads.

Actually I own a GL2 and yes, it can get amazing results. I have gotten some awsome shots with it but now I find it to be too simple of a camera. I was saying that its a great cam for filmy looking shots but if you want a skater/follow cam/fisheye kinda movie, then a Sony is the better bet. The Panisonic DVX definately owns both the Sony vx/FX1 and the Canon GL2/XL2

Just to add a little info... The VX series have 1/3rd inch ccds while the GL series and DVC30 have 1/4th inch ccds and the ol' saying applies, "the bigger the better"... But it really comes down to personal preference, I'm a Sony man myself sporting the OG vx1000 but I wouldn't recommend it unless the majority of your filming is going to be skateboarding...

FYI, the GL onboard mic audio is very bad when on auto but with manual settings it can be just fine and the picture can be fairly grainy compared to the Sonys...

If you are going to be filming snow riding, I really would suggest the Panasonic DVX100 if you are able shell out that much money, that is... Its one of the best prosumer camcorders out on the market right now and I believe a lot of White Shine was shot with the dvx using the 24p setting...

But please check out the skateperception forums, http://www.skateperception.com/ I'm one of the moderators on there and it's a very good site to get the down low on anything you need to know about "extreme sports" videography... hehe

not really. The sonys only shoot 60i and have a sharper image than the GL2, but the GL2 shoots 30i which, in my opinion is way sicker. Motion is more important than sharpness in my book so I'd be willing to sacrifice sharpness for motion any day. I even use the custom preset on my GL2 to turn down sharpness. bah. I'll never like Sony cams because everything they make can only shoot interlaced and I hate the way that looks.

I think he was referring to the the Century Optics "death lenses" which are very good for the vx series camcorders, especially the coveted mark 1 for the vx1000 which can also be moded to fit on the vx2000/2100... Although I don't think a .3x fisheye would be that great for snow filming, it probably would be way too wide for its own good but then again I only film skating so thats just my guess...

no I was just referring to the overall image itself. It is less muddy, 60i, and sharper, which is really good for those up close shots or that "intense/reality" style that is used in a lot of Skateboarding and some ski/snowboard movies.

The GL2 has a bit of a muddy picture, which makes it look less digital. More like eyesight. Yes its softer but the images fucking kill the Sonys when it comes to the filmy look when shot at long lens. It can shoot some really nice fisheyes too, but its nothing like the Sonys when it comes to that stuff.


Sony isn't better than Canon, and Canon isn't better than Sony. Its all preference. Saying one is better is like comparing Armada skis to K2 skis. It really just depends on the person and what they are shooting. iPoosk must like the digi/skater look, so I can see why he likes VXs, and why hes saying GL2s aren't as good for skating, cause they're not. But I, on the other hand, dislike Sony cams more than any cam because they shoot the exact opposite of what my filming style is.
