So I have decided to get into Alpine touring. My first and most important question would be what bindings to get. The popular Freeriders or the Naxo Nx21's? I have heard that the Naxo's were not that great last year, but I have also heard that the Freeriders had a tendancy to break and have a lot of flex with them being mostly made out of plastic. Oh by the way I just got last years Fischer Atua's so that is what I will be mounting them to. Also I will be skiing in Montana near Bigsky and Bridger Bowl. I haven't even looked into skins, so any suggestions on them? And finally has anyone tried to tour in normal alpine boots? Is it going to be super uncomfortable to the point were I should buy the $500 touring boots? Any advice is appreciated.
You dont need AT boots unless you are doing it ALOT.
Get either Black Diamond Ascension Skins with the STS Tail (very important) or the G3 skin. Dont consider anything else.
I've had both the Freeride and Nx21....I much prefer the Nx21. The New Freeride Plus is supposed to be better, so you probably cant go wrong with either the FR+ or Nx21. Personally, I like how the nx21 tours more so I will probably stick with it for awhile.
I would recommend the freerides myself, but Naxos are pretty nice as well. For skins, I am a Black Diamond fan, but check around and see what people at the shops are recommending too, Northern Lights would be a really good place to go. When I go backcountry skiing I just use my regular boots, but if you're going to be going out 20+ days a year it might be a good idea to get some touring boots if you have the money laying around. If not, regular boots aren't that bad and are a little nicer on the way down anyway.
