External Hard Drive?

I'm thinking that since my computer crashed once, it could and proly will again, since its a PC. This said, I'm now spending my time re-uploading hours of footage and music and shit back onto my computer. I was thinkin maybe if I put just my media on an external hard drive it would be easier to get back, and available to me even if my comp isnt. Is this a good idea? How much can I expect to pay for one?

It depends on how much stuff you have, but a 100 gb hard drive is usually more than enough.

why wold you re-upload shit? i get the impression that your computer crashes a lot, and that is the reason why youre uploading all of this video? but that doesnt make sense.

you need to buy a box (external casing so you can connect it) for them. that costs around 40-50 bucks. right now, best buy is having this sale on 160gb seagate drives for 90 bucks

almost all computers have one series for hard drives. and each series supports to drives (master, slave kinda thing)

if you only have one hard drive in you computer, then you dont need an external. externals are generally more expensive - i just bought a 300gb internal for 120 bucks - so you can buy a second drive and install it IN your computer.

viruse only attack drives that have an OS on them.

forget what i said about the external casing. i forgot that you dont even have a drive in the first place. casings will allow you to make internal drives external. but if you buy an actual external drive, it will just connect through USB

i got a 250gb external for 100$. search ebay for idisk or idrive...somthing like that, i don't have it right here so i'm not sure exactly what the name is. their western digital harddrives with a case that this guy makes himself. so far it works great.

go to LaCie's site and look for refurbished hard drives, i got one and it works fine. comes with warranty too

i bought a 400 gig western digital one.

I kind of wish i had bought a lacie or maxtor instead. i don't really trust the plastic casing on the WD compared to the metal casings on LAcie og maxtor

Are you kidding me?  Don't listen to this statement at all. 

Here is the setup I got.  Just get an external enclosure for the hard drive, then buy a normal internal hard drive.  320 GB and only $133 for the whole setup.

viruses are only written to attack drives with an OS on them. they can spread, but its unlikely.

Not true at all.  I can't think of any specific ones right now, but I know there was whoes sole intention was to delete any and all documents.  Be it .doc, .txt, .xls or a slew of others.

viruses are written to piggy back other programs. it tags on to a program so that when the selected program starts so does the virus. then the virus can run and do its thing to whatever its written out.
the shit youre talking about is a worn or a trojan, very different from a virus.
although viruses can infect text documents, they are usually intended to attack the OS.

external harddrives work well compared to a PC. i got one with 120 GB for about $100. they're great for protecting your work from viruses. however, they have a drawback. if your parents are retarded and manage to short out the harddrive you still lose all of your work. i bought a 200 GB for $150 and i had to re-upload all my footage anyways. but i still think that it is safer than storing it on your computer. my advice is to get a mac because they tend to crash less and there are less viruses made for them. i put all my footage on mine and back it up on a harddrive.

^also, Maxtor makes a good external harddrive. pretty small and lightweight and they look pretty slick...they come in USB and Firewire models

i got a 250Gig external to back up all my music.

Got it for $139 CDN

make sure it's 7200 Rpm, and higher the data buffer the better, mine is 8MB.

what u want is a box with 4*250 GB and a raid system...

if u don´t now what raid is -> u got 2 parts both with 500gb, 2*250gb in each. and u only use 500gb - if u do store anything on one half, the other half will contain the exact same thing.. really good if ure tired of crashes crash....
