any advice on the school, im currently looking at it and want to hear from some people who attend or have attended the school

You'll need some more specific questions. I go there, I enjoy it....but the professors are totally hit or miss.....I have had a professor change my views on life completely....and I have had professors that don't look away from the chalkboard (and talk into it) for 2 hours.....

The partying is allright, and theres lots to do on campus. Whislter is 1.5 hours away and if you're a student then the pass is only $384.13 for the season...

The girls are.....well......hit or miss as well....i see a lot of sweatpants...especially a couple months into the year when the Freshman15 truly hits....

What else you wanna know?

haha,,freshman 15,,, we always called it the college 20,,, its so true tho,,,,,,,,,,,, i went to ubc and i loved it,,, prestigous school with lots of money to spend on its students and close enough to whistler and local mountains to keep the good times rolling

^damn totem park is supposed to be THE party residence at UBC, right by wreck beach and everything.

I am going into arts, 1st year.

Does anybody know if the ski&snowboard club is worth joining or just useless?

I suggest Cap College if you think on skiing in the winter and dont' get behind in your school work. I am in a University Transfer program there and its good.

First day at UBC was pretty good. It felt maybe slightly too much like going into grade 8 but the university sounds like a cool place.

1. Would "don't join the ski and board club" be enough to dissuade you? It should be.

2. It's probably too late, but if you have the opportunity, drop as many 100 level classes in favour of 200 and 300 level as you can (assuming no prerequisites). You will save yourself a lot of wasted time, money, effort, and quite honestly torture.

3. There are more girls than guys at UBC. Unfortunately, this statistic is misleading, as most of them aren't exactly 10s.

4. Regardless of what faculty you are in, take any arts class you can handle by Christopher W. Marshall (HAPPY to pay to take any course from him), Stephen Guy-Bray, Linda Morra (may actually be the single nicest human being on the face of this planet), Andrew Irvine, Dominic Lopes, Alex Dick (you'll suddenly be noticeably smarter), or Kieran Kiely.

If you are in the Arts faculty I can help you further.

What's up with the 4x4 anyway, when's that go on sale. There haven't been any signs up yet.

Yes, you can be an idiot and buy one without being a transcript, but boy will they be pissed when you show up to pick up your pass without student ID and a valid transcript showing that you're a student this year.

I'm pretty sure my math 184 teacher will be Christopher Marshall. I think most 200 level courses have pre-requisites, and my 100 level courses seem quite interesting. I'm in the coordinated arts program (Political science, Philosophy, Economics stream) and most teachers (not sure about philosophy) seem very good. I'm also taking a Natural Disasters course and it rules. Seriously thinking of transferring into Sauder next year, which is why I signed up for some easy math. But so far, UBC seems fun, some quite decent partying and lots of people to meet all around campus. And it's true that not all girls are that good looking, but there is still quite a number of cougars running around wild.

I went to that info session. Well it is very very competitive to say the least, 200 spots and 1500 applicants usually. It's a broad-based application, so you have to do the BCOM extra application and need to emphasize not only your academics but volunteering and extra curricular activities as well. The academics prerequisites, to get directly into second year of commerce, are English 112, some specific math sections at 100 levels, Macro/Micro Economics, and 15 credits (I think) of electives. It's all on the sauder website as well, but pm me if you got more questions

what residences (if you're in rez) are you guys in?

my floor is sick for skiing/boarding.  i'm the worst park skier/boarder on my floor (of the people who do it regularly, and there are more than i expected), and i can 5.  plus one of the boarders has a sick video camera.  i'm stoked.

it's awesome, lots of opportunities to party and such, plus i've met some new people to ski with.  lovin it.  oh, and my new girlfriend lives 3 floors up from me, so pretty much whenever i want.... yeah, you get the idea.

Well you pretty much have three decently shaped local mountains that are only 15-20 minutes away. Then you have whistler ofcourse which is about a 1:30 hour commute from the university, pretty sick if you ask me...

Yeah. More than an hour if you're transiting. I don't know why people think it takes so little time to drive places in Van, usually the timelines you get need to be doubled.

I'm currently going to Cap College but I got accepted to UBC for next fall.. I'll go into 2nd or 3rd year and I want to major in Japanese. Should be fun... the Japanese courses sound interesting... and I hear the ski club has a lodge in Whistler...?

Whats the situation for non-freshman housing? Should I be looking for an off-campus apartment?

Gage towers, on campus, but you get a lot more privacy and you cook your own meals. You need to be 19 by the way. There are other residences too, thunderbird, the places by the village,... Otherwise, getting a basement suite in kits is kind of expensive and may be hard to find.

And the Ski&Board club is actually fun, especially the trips, which are a gong show from beginning to end, the beer gardens are not bad either.

gage towers or the fairview townhouse style residence complex.  you need to be 19 by dec 31 07 to get in.  also, apply for housing now, because the deadline passed for reapplication, i'm not sure about first application.



it's engineering week now, so keep your eyes on the news, you never know where a VW bug shell might show up (although i don't think it'll be under the golden gate again).... lots of rumors going around that somethings up.
