need some good ideas for sturdy rail designs and i need some help on grinding. everytime i trie it i just slide off

have the balls to turn completely 90 degrees...if u dont ure at an angle and will fall off....um and have sufficient speed...about the designs, um just PVC and wood is good for beginers...if u wanna make some cool ones get metal

Make sure you are getting on the rail under your boots, and you wanna be at a 90 degree angle to the rail, if you aren't you will slide off. And the wider the stance the easier it is. Also try to look at the end of the rail.

oh, and the more you jump on - the harder it is.... like the less bang onto the rail the better.... so try and absorb the jump and get your skis right on the rail instead of airing onto it. um and speed is also your friend. rails are a lot harder going slowly. later

All of what these guys are saying, wide stance, 90 angle center your weight on both feet, maybe a little more on your front foot, get the rail under your boot. But the most important thing in grinding the whole rail is your approach. Line the rail up, like you're looking down the barrel of a gun. Ski straight for it. Air onto the rail, letting it go between your legs (not literally... you should be over the rail...) Pivot 90 once you're in the air, and once you lock on, keep looking at the very end of the rail until you're clear! I tought Rex Thomas this technique a while back, and he's been loving it ever since! Hope it works for you! Peace, N8

so - feet should be at shoulder width or so, 90 degrees to the rail. keep your bases flat, that is very important. make sure you stay over your feet and don't lean back. for me it helps to keep my upper body facing the direction you are moving. and put your hands out in front of you.

yea..remember pain goes away, i am afraid so i lean back on rails which is a very BAD idea, just keep your weight forward

Contrary to popular belief, putting all or most of your weight on your front foot is not the key to sliding rails. Speed is your key element! make sure your are going fast enough so that when you hit the jump before the rail, instead of popping off like a normal jump, use your sped to suck your legs up and make you weightless in the air. stay in the front seat and touch your feet, but not your weight, onto the rail.

go straight at the rail and the jump up and turn 90 degrees and the keep the weight 50-50 on both feet.

dude - skiers won't even be able to get onto that rail. We need a jump going into it. the only way to slide that is to side slip into it, which doesn't work too good, and is exactly how I busted the edge off my ski at tremblant before they built jumps into the starts or their rails. jumps are key for sliding technical rails like that.

but jumps on to the rails scare the buhjeezus outta me. in my first attempts i felt more comfortable trying the rainbow rail (which i couldn't stick)that had a smooth transition than a normal rail that had a jump leading on to it. it just sketched me out. although...it did feel like the jump helped a bit. i was less likely to slow down and lose my speed.

Ok this weekend i was trying to learn to grind and every single time I would hit this rail, wham right between the legs. luckly it was a short rail, but how can I keep myself from doing this?

SKIERS DO NOT NEED TO JUMP ONTO RAILS. PLEASE EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SNOWBOARD AND A SKI THAT MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE TO SLIDE ONTO A RAIL? YOU ALMOST ALWAYS HAVE TO SLIDE ONTO RAINBOW RAILS. WATCH SARAH BURKE IN PROPAGANDA, THATS A PERFECT SHOT OF IT.

snowboarders can hit it straight on and then turn to do a boardslide. Skiers however have to turn first if there is no jump. but when you turn on the snow you need to lean into the hill or else you will catch your outside edge and impale yourself on the rail. and usually the inruns to rails around here have a groove in them so that it is impossible to turn before the rail. That's the difference.

oh and sycho skier don't turn your shoulders down the hill.... just your head that way your skis won't turn down hill.

and watch the festival video clip. The clip of everyone falling on the rail is after the jump was changed so it was much harder to hit.

ok not impossible... but fucking hard.... and I completely fucked my skis entering a rail like that. I caught my edge on the end of the rail which was sticking out of the snow by like an 8th of an inch, and it got pushed right into my base sending me on my face.
It is also really hard to controle your speed coming into a rail sideways....
Rails also get really rutted on the way in, making side slipping very dificult.
OK so It isn't impossible, but it is not at all easy.
