I question about riding jackets.

Is it true that they are desined for airflow through the side and not on the chest like you would in skiing?

you mean snowboarding jackets? I dont think it really matters you dont wanna wear anything "new school" skiers wear in a race because as my old ski coach said, they're just gigantic sails. In conclusion, I seriously doubt they put that much though into function considering that snowboard jackets are way more focused on style than function.
