So I saved a life today...

I'm a lifeguard and I had the experience of saving my first life today. One middle aged (very obese) man was swimming in the deep end and he has back problems and he made a bad stroke and began drowning and swallowed a lot of water. So I jumped in and grabbed him and pulled him out. On the pool deck he coughed up so much water it was nasty. But all is good now. If no one was there that man would have drown. Just thought I'd share...

He was conscious. And no we don't do mouth to mouth we use barrier devices such as pocket masks. They create a better seal and allow air to flow in the nasal cavaty and the asauphogus.

obviously. its the most dangerous thing about drowning. he sat down for a while to calm him down and then we told him to see a doctor ASAP

its when you swallow lots of water and in desperation to breathe, your epiglottis opens up allowing water into the lungs. normally the ammount of water is small (if its big it can be dangerously fatal). ive never been taught how to treat that but its not my job to treat it its for the docs.

chances are the hot chick would have to have some pretty massive tits for her back to seize up and start to drown her.
but I suppose they'd just bouy her up

not necessarely. and its not because of homophobia its for personal sanitation. and also like i mentioned, its more effective than just using a plugged nose/ mouth seal.

no, not that, we are allowed to protect ourselves from any transmittalbe disease the victim may have and also we are required to protect the victim from any communicable disease we may have. its not an option to use one or not. we have to. you want to get a mouthful of vomit and blood? no. we don't know if these people have hiv.

well put. thankfully this guy didnt vomit so i dont suspect he has a sensative case of secondary drowning. he just coughed up some water and that was about it.
