so my buddy and i are going out to tahoe in the beginning of feb. wondering where should we stay? where is the good night life at? any recommendations on which resorts to definitely hit and which to miss? good places to stay? any other good opinions or thoughts
north shore is coo' not a big nitelife scene but you've got North*, Alpine, Boreal at night and Squaw. All a lot of fun. South Shore rolls hard too with Sierra and Heavenly, probably a lil more nitelife cuz of the bigger casinos.
what are some of the big draws to the different resorts ie. why does joe love borreal and what does alpine have that the others dont. i wish i could stay like two weeks and really explore and ski all the resorts but that will never happen. so if i had say 4 days of skiing which ways should i roll. i do not need a great park or even any park at all to have a good time. i have never skied any kind of big mountain before so i know i will love any resort out there.
Boreal = crowded park, no good, east coast experience with 500-vert - no reason to go to unless your going at night
If you have 4-days where you go depends on the conditions
If you are LUCKY and it is fresh just stay at Alpine or Squaw...it takes a lot longer than 4-days to get bored of either hill..
Do not bother with the south shore at all...waste of driving..
If it is dumping to hard and squaw/alpine are shutdown from wind/snow go to homewood and kill it
Avoid North* at all costs - you are probably going during a holiday so everywhere will be packed...but Northstar is just an eastcoast hill with a lot of snow...
Best idea...rent a car and go to mammoth instead and stay out of tahoe completly
Alpine is cheap and badass, but Mt.Rose kills now that they opened the Chutes or whatever, and its still a helluva lot cheaper than Squaw or Kirkwood. I could ski either of those mountains year-round without a problem, they're awesome.
Alpine Meadows = the tits. While in tahoe I skied Sierra, Nortthstar, Boreal, and Alpine, and Alpine was the dopest. SOOO much terrain, lots of it lift access, but a lot hike only, not as crowded or expensive as Squaw, but gnar gnar for terrain, pow, etc. Park was fun as well, but why would I ski park when there is pow to be had?
I've skied everywhere in Tahoe (as, I'm sure, have many people on this site). Heavenly is good because it is huge and has a little of everything. Plus it is SO RAD to ski and look out over the desert!
Last year the weather was crazy and we got stuck skiing Sugar Bowl for three days straight (getting to Alpine was out of the question). If you like cliffs, Sugar Bowl is a great place to go. Not to mention the fact that if you are 23 or under, you get a pretty good discount. I lied and told them I was under 23 and they didn't check my ID, which means great cheap skiing!
unfotunately we will both be 26 in the beginning of april. but from what i am picking up alpine and squaw are favorites. i have also heard in the past good things about heavenly. we will have a rental car so maybe a 1 day trip down to mammoth wouldnt be out of the question either. anyway anybody else got any info about the area out there? any good places to stay any places we should definitely not stay?
^^ If your only here for a few days do not worry to hard about the nightlife...cause there is NONE on the northshore (trust me, I have lived here for 10 years)
Places to stay...the travellodge in Tahoe City is a good bet, if it is snowing, your gonna want to be as close to the hill as possible, or risk beng shut out due to road closures and bad drivers (I.e. clowns in rental cars from the east coast)
Truckee - Best Western, Hampton Inn
Or...gather up some friends and rent a house (much cheaper that way)
I still suggest mammoth...it is a 3 - 3.5 hour drive from Reno depending on the roads ...I stay at the eidelweisss inn whenever I go (which is about 20-30 days a year)...they rent cabins for about 120 a night with your own kitchen...so you can eat on the cheap...
Nightlife in mammoth is way better than tahoe, all the pretty people from socal go there...so bring your hair gel!
squaw is sick. alpine is just as sick, and alot cheaper. n* is absolutely awful. i wouldn't ski there ever again. like someone said earlier, if you're only there for 4 days, don't worry about nightlife. there are bars at the base of squaw that are open late, just go drink with your friends and don't get too burntout that you won't be able to shred the next day.
seeing as i have done almost all my skiing in michigan and never been west to ski before the park is the last thing on my mind. and nightlife isnt a must have but goin for a couple drinks at night is always a nice thing.
mammoth would be cool but i will probably save that for another time
shh, it was my first winter ever getting out west so I went where I could get in free with my pass and friends. I lived at alpine during spring break though during the epic dumps in mid march... easily the best skiing of my life.
south lake has got sierra, heavenly, kirkwood and the night life is bumpin there and north shore has less of a night life but better mountains. N*, Squaw, Alpine
reno has the crack. stoopeidoodle dummy out her. go to fritz that place is some what crazkn minus the emo unr queer balls and the gay music they play 2 days a week. there are some beezos that are all on the jock tho and they have beer pong and freestyle raps on thursdays. it is right acrozz the street from gay unr
please dont use the words "hyphy" and "tahoe" in the same sentence... leave that shit in the bay where it belongs
unless you actually promote the use of cocaine and ecstacy, in which case, get the fuck outta tahoe!
sleeping in the car used to be a good idea but my body does not react well to that anymore, trying to ski after car sleeping cramps aches and pains would not be ideal. plus my buddy works for a hilton chain and can probably get us really cheap rooms, if any of the hotels "participate" in their employee program. probably our biggest expense is gonna be getting a damn rental car thats big enough for my skis and his boards.
Boreal is sick but only for rails. The tables there are smaaaaaal. I don't know what that one guy was talking about, Boreal was always a ghost town when I went.
Northstar is sick and has tons of sick rails and fun features. Theres only one big jump though, which is the big step down in the pro park. That place is sooooo crowded though its crazy. and I hear they're putting in man made cliffs and I saw from the PBP shoot that there were 2 urban style handrails in a row, so that will be sick.
And if you're in Tahoe, don't forget the urbans! Hit up the northstar parking lot rail or the rockwall rail. theres so many to hit that I don't know where to begin.
^True but you can't really go to Tahoe assuming that you'll be able to ski big mountain. Tahoe only get like four or five storms a year, excluding last March of course that was a fluke, and one of those storms happens right after Christmas. So since you are going in February you chances of being their during a big storm are pretty slim. If you don't get hit by some powder while there you have 3 options: ski moguls(lame), ski groomers(slightly less lame), or ride park(Super fun). So planning on riding park the majority of you trip isn't such a bad idea.
Alpine is the place to go, or Squaw if you have the money. These are by far the best resorts to go to. Northstar sucks, don't waste your money. Boreal can be fun at night, but otherwise don't bother.
