Reformatting an Exernal Hard drive, Mac

My friend bought an external hd from New Egg. Its supposed to be 250g but its only reading 31g. It is not partitioned. Anyone got some tips.

go into disk utility, pick the harddrive on the left you want to format, then click the erase tab. If you are using it as a startup disk, choose Mac OS Extended(journaled), or if its just for storing stuff pick Mac OS Extended. Name it and erase and that should be it.

well to reformat a hard drive on a mac is super easy. All you need to do is use Disk Utility, its found in the Utility Folder located in Applications. So just hookup the hard drive so its disk image is on the desktop. Then open up Disk Utility. Once in disk utility select the external hard drive. Then go to the erase option. Name you hard drive and choose the volume format. Then just click erase and your done. If you have any questions just message me.

I did that. I think the drive must be damaged, because it still isnt reading properlly. That you very much for the help you two.

Some older computers can't read hard drives over a certain size. If those things didn't work I don't know what to tell you because I know nothing about os x.
