We were going to build a rail but...

We found a bunch of old 4 by 4s behind my friends garage and having just watched lord of the rings the night before we decided to build a catapult. it took us the better part of a day to build (we made our own plans).

When we were tightening the rope that throws the arms it took 3 people to pull on the tightening thing we made (a long metal pipe with a clamp on the end). All said and done we were shooting rocks about the size of your two fists together 125-150 feet and rocks the size of one fist well over 175 and a few broke 200.

in my one class this year in tenth grade we built a trebuchet which is a different form of a catapult.  we first built mini one's with a like 1 pound counterweight, and threw little nuts and bolts into a cardboard castle.  after that we worked in groups of three and built a larger one with 10 pounds of counterweight and threw a golfball.  the golfballs went about 100 of more feet.  then after that the whole class worked on one that was about 8 feet high and the throwing arm was like 15 feet long.  we used over 400 pounds of counterweight for that and threw various fruits such as watermelon, canteloupe, squash and other random things.  if i can find a picture from my friend or something i'll post it. it was the most fun i've had in school

I have a small catapault, that I built a LONG time ago. IT was meant for shooting flour bombs. I havent touched it in a long time, but I remember the rope that was used to keep the tension, pinched the 2x4 so hard that the 4" part was like, 1 1/2" in one part.

I built a small catipult once for physics class. It was pretty sweet and we had to launch eggs into a frying pan from like 20ft away.
