I've done a day trip from Paradise Base up to Camp Mir. Its a pretty fun hike I guess, but its usually really packed with people. Mt Adams is a much better climb in my opinion.

I've had three attempts, two summits. I did the guide route the past two summers (summited the first time), and did the Camp Hazard route this summer. I'd recommend the guide route (muir to disappointment cleaver) or the Camp Curtis route (up the inter glacier) for your first attempt.

you can climb it anytime of year, but the later you wait, the worse the conditions get.
THe best time to climb is May or June for sure. The weather can be really nice and cooperative (it can also be hell). There is an abundance of snow from the winter, so a lot of the crevasses still havent opened up, and it hasn't really gotten warm enough for a lot of rockfalls and ice falls. Once August rolls around, it gets pretty sketchy.
And as Holte said, for your first attempt (unless you are a well experience climber) go the guide route. It has a gain of 10,000 vertical feet, so it isn't too shabby. Its a great climb.

I'd recommend climbing Mt. St. helens. I did it 9 years ago. It's pretty easy and fun. I don't know if they are still letting people climb up there though.
