Internet help...

Alright, here's the deal.  My brother is in Europe right now and the internet in his appartment comes in through a splitter into a USB and phone line.  He can't plug the phone line into his macbook, and plugging in the USB doesn't do anything.  I have no idea of anything beyond that, but he needs to get internet working... NS, help me out with this one, what does he ahve to do to get this working?

uh, splitter? that doesn't make any sense. is it dial-up or high speed? and if it's high speed, is it dsl or cable?

again, all I know is written above... I'm not there to see it and it's from 5 minutes that he taked on the phone with me aobut it... that is what he told me.

the computer at the house (which is missing a powercord so they can't use it right now) had the USB pluged into it for internet.... so why can't he just plug that into his macbook?

I'm assuming a USB cord... what it sounds like is there is a cord coming from the wall, then it splits into a USB cord, and a telephone cord.  The USB WAS plugged into the computer at the house their renting (they enver used this computer).  Plugging the USB into his computer doesn't do anything.  This is all I know about it.  If I was there to look at it it'd be a hell of a lot easier, just looking for ideas to tell him next time I talk to him.

DSL needs authentication on the computer its plugged into. Either in the form of software and a password included with the modem, or a basic PPPOE authentication process in the operating system itself (windows has it...not sure on a MAC) Best bet is to try and track down the installation kit and account information from when the service was first installed.

sorry wasnt finished. The USB is generally a modem (which would be what the split phone line goes into). So that will be plugged into his laptop, then the laptop will authenticate and connect through it.
