Kafka

Anyone read anything by him. I just read "The Trial" and "The Metamorphasis". Noww these books are considered some of the best ones of all time and are viewed as the peak of modern literature....but i dont really know what to make of them...like why are they so great?

we read some kafka last year...just "the metamorphosis" i think. i don't believe i read quite as much of it as i was supposed to for the class. i don't know, it's an interesting story for sure, but i wasn't sure really what to make of it.

i think this kind of book is best read along with spark notes, or discussion with some sort of scholar.

the metamorphosis is really brilliant. when you learn more about kafka's life you realize how unique his sense of humour was. his books definitely require some self analysis and interpretation which is why i really like them.

Kafka is considered the a benchmark to existentialism because of how most of his work is based of a feeling of hopelessness. it was his style at the time that made it remarkable and one of the first true modernists. He was also one of the first (or most notable) authors to use alienation and persecution in his writing.

they're "great" because of the time they were written they were the first of their kind, and few other authors have ben able to capture the feeling of alienation as well. I mean, he comes out and says that you can be a roach in you're family and then goes into the alienation/seperation form there. personally i don't think either are that outstanding but some fo his other stream of conciousness writing is absolutely insane.
