is there any possible way to prevent shin splints, because they are the most #$%&ing annoying injury in skiing. I would prefer that this solution be free, though i will take anything.
Thanks boys & ladies

not sure, try stretching, that's the first step to preventing injury so it usually does the job

its probably not shin splints.
Its probably from landing backseat.
If it is shin splints then just ice it.

YEah, landing back seat even a few times in a day, rips the muscle off your shin bone and hurts like a mother. try landing only switch for a few days and icing and stretching.

stretch before, ice after... get gel inserts for your boots/shoes... whatever, im not sure whether or not there are different kinds of shin splints, but the ones i have are a crack in the bone... and then when you land hard, or walk, most anything, they press together. i think?

take a ski pole and rub it as hard as you can on your shin, that will get rid of them

I don't think there's ONE thing you could do to prevent shin splints, but I mean once you feel it, ice it, tape yourself up, take some painkillers and just take it.

Yeah, that happened to me all the time when I was learning 3's and stuff like that. If your shins start to hurt, just ski a couple of runs and then go back to the park latter.

the latest fad around here was bubble wrapping your shins. supposedly it works but it kind of suprises you when you case a jump and it sounds like your leg just exploded. my advice would be get some good boots and smoke a bowl

I'm pretty sure I had that thing that nine_milla_killa is talkin about, from being backseat. I went to a sports medicine orthopedist or something for it. It was real bad and went on for like a month and a half. He gave me some samples of vioxx. After a few skiing days taking that and then a few taking Ibuprophen the pain has been gone.

alright here's what i'm thinkin. tight boots are bad but loose like ur mother is bad too. it could also be ur insoles, try gettin speacil insoles, or softer ones, like u can get for shoes. don't back seat the landings, ice and make sure when ur not skiing to take it easy on ur feet, nothin crazy for a while

dspin7x had it right, if you want to get rid of boot bang for good, u gotta do the pole rolling on the shin thing, it kinda hurts but if u keep it up for a whole season then u will build up a layer of scar tissue and no more boot bang jeff thomas told me about it and its one of the best things ive ever done for my skiing

if ur thinkn of gettn new skis next year, take that money and invest in some 1080 boots. i had the worst shin bangs, tried skiing with tighter boots, looser, icing, heating, but the only instant cure was new boots. day i got them it felt better to be in my boots than walk around in shoes. and since then i've had no shin problems. believe me on this one, just get 1080s or mabe try another jib boot.

Streching with a towel works. Wrap the towel around your foot and pull towards you. Ice and then heat. Also they make compression wraps that go around your shin so you could try that too

i suggest getting a hot tub at your house. i have one and it is great. there's a seat in it with 42 jets alone. great for parties too. oh yeah, and it helps shit bang.

tighten your power starp up good and on the actual inner boot, not the plasti shell, then dont press to forward on them, try to have a centered stance. also twisting your tongue so they fit your shins helps, i also got this really dense foam stuff from a ski shop that i put infront of my shin and inside my boot. sterch too, i used to have them so bad last year, but this year it has barely bothered me at all. hope that helped

how bout this? it's one of the bad things about skiing...everyone gets it, you can't prevent it,a dn you can't get rid of it...that's what happens when you land and slam your entire body weight into hard plastic boots...just take the pain, and take some painkillers while your at it (PS...i can barely walk right now from em...)

no thats wrong not everyone gets it, you can prevent it, and you can fix it too. just take a bat or anything round like a ski pole and rub as hard as you can it hurst but then makes it feel better i guess it supposedly kills some of the nerves in your shins but really if you think about it why do you need nerves in your shins they just hurt anyway

that doesn't sounds like it would make it feel better (a bat or ski pole)

Stop landing backseat, the pole/bat thing isn't bad(don't rub TOO hard...but it'll hurt, and that's ok) and massage it hard with a smooth chunk of ice. Or just prevent it by NOT LANDING BACKSEAT LIKE A FUCKING LOSER.

I've been running track all my life and i can say that shin splints come from over training. aka overworkiong that muscle on the front of your shins so that they pull away from the bone. My treatement for shin splints has always been ice as often as possible to speed up healing. The best way to avoid shin splints, like any other injusy is to stretch. Stretch calves style and hamstring style (whether it seems logical or not) to avoid shin splints. On top of that don't over train or hit too many hard landings at the start of the season or after a long break. Ease into in to allow teh muscles to repair themselves and gradually strengthen properly. These are jsut suggestions based on experience, do whatever seems to flank YOUR wank, not mine.

Keep your boot done up
Use one of those machines that you bring you toes up toward you shins (put some weight on the machine) and strech
by the way Is you last name berry?

Two words: BOOSTER STRAPS - I've just skied a week solid after putting these straps on my boots and my shins feel GREAT. Normally after one day my shins are killing me, but after six days straight wit hthe Boosters I'm fine. What they are is elastic straps to replace the power strap in your boots. Because they are elastic, you can get your boots tight and they still 'give' when you flex forward in them. My turns on the groomers feel better with them too. Check them out at http://www.skimetrix.com/ or a decent ski shop.
