Freaking out about majors...

So, i'm going to be a freshman this fall in college... I'm going into the business school, and the motivation behind that is the idea of getting into the ski industry. But the more i hear about it, the more it seems like it's either crazy busy, or really hard to get into. So, i thought whatever, i'll just do a marketing concentration and take some entrepreneur classes so i can go into publicity or something.
But then someone tells me college is all about learning more about something that interests you. So now i'm wondering if maybe i should go into the regular school and major in history. then people tell me stick with business, see how you like it. Well, sure, but the core requirements for the different school are quite different!
this is more to get it off my chest, but if you have any advice, experience, please help.

duude, don't worry about your major. If you're going into a professional program (athletic training, PT, OT, Pre-vet, or something along those lines), you'll need to get into the program asap, but if you knew that's what you wanted, you wouldn't have made this thread. Take a bunch of classes that seem interesting and from those, pick a major. I just finished my freshman year and I've already done Athletic Training, pre-med, and PT stuff, and HATED it all and now I'll have to do 5 years because the classes I took for those can't count for any other major (with the exception of a few electives). So don't freak out and explore. Going in undecided is fine; they have advisors to help you through that.

And in regards to the business school, if you're pretty sure you want to do something along the lines of business; get into the school itself and keep your options open from there.
What school by the way?

sell your soul and stay in the business school. chances are that if you major in business you can land a solid job and make decent money (so long as you get your mba). if you are interested in history, study it on your own time and enjoy it.

honestly, it really doesn't matter your freshman year. I just finished my freshman year, and a lot of people changed their majors more than once throughout the year (and i'm sure many will continue to change their majors their sophomore year). Take some classes in each area, knock out some core requirements your fresh year, and take your time deciding on a major.

#1 You're a smart dude. I read a lot of what you have to say in other threads and I can tell you use brain.
#2 You're going to be a freshman. Theres no reason to stress over this shit now. You haven't even stepped into college yet. A lot of people are faced with this.
#3 Probably the best thing i can say to you is to go into an area that you want to study right now. And for gen ed requirements and electives, take other courses, that you think might interest you. So if you're thinking about business. Hell go into the business school. And take the basic business intro classes. But i'm sure you'll be allowed an elective or two a semester. Take a history course if you want. See if you like it. Then that'll give you an idea of what you want to do.
For example... I'm going to be a sophomore here at the University of Pittsburgh. I came into school, with a General Biology "Area of Study". Which just means I'm intending on doing a General Biology major (and will also satisfy my pre-med requirements). After my first semester, I met some friends who were planning on studying Anthropology. I kinda liked it. So i took interest in it. I talked to my advisor about anthropology, and wow did i get lucky. Aparently at Pitt there are quite a few BIO and ANTHRO courses that are cross referenced. So now it looks like I might be doing a double major in General Biology and Anthropology. It won't be that bad, as long as i take the right classes, and 15 credits a semester and a few summer courses. It's early yet, but there is a good possibility that I could graduate in the normal 4 years with a degree in Biology and Antropology and a minor in chemisty.
You just gotta play around with it too. My best advice would be to do an internship next summer after you freshman year. On the job experience is the best way to determine what you want to do. Hope that helps bro.

haha, fuck engineering. everyone i know who does it has a c average, and works their ass off.
as for the other replies - im already in the business school, and core requirements are different from the GEN ed ones... so thats what worries me - im already on a limited budget going out of state, and i dont really want to extend my stay more than i have to. unless i find a company that'll hire me and pay for my school like my bro did =p

I had a similar situation and i can tell you dont freak out. Im a marketing major in the Haskayne Shool of Business of the University of Calgary, for your first year you have the opportunity to take a lot of electives. After that you can decide, oooor you could go the route that i did and just do the whole damn thing. Double major, Bcomm in Marketing from the business school, English ba.....and a history minor. I hope it allows me to become a more rounded student, and i dont get bored with straight accounting bullshit.

freshman year is about networking and meeting people. worry about making friends and doing alright in school at the same time. leave your schedule open to party and enjoy new experiences.

you really dont need to declare your major for a couple of years. Chances are you will change your mind anyways. I mentally changed my major like 3 times in my freshman year.

honestly, i would pick something you love doing, and just pusue that career.i mean, if after college you still are interested in buisness, you can get an over grad in buisness, but while you are an under grad, you should do something that you enjoy doing. i think that will make the experience better, but its ultimately your desicion

there are a few ways around paying out-of-state. My cuz did it by becoming independent and my mom giving him "donations/gifts" that came from his mom. It was worth it for him. You also have to live in colorado for one year

not just live in colorado for one year, otherwsie every sophmore would have in state tuition. you need to have your name on a lease for a year.

lol if you're a philosophy major... I don't mean to be a dick or anything... but what do you do with a degree in philosophy? haha. I was under the impression the a degree in philosophy allows you to teach others...philosophy.
Although my pre-med advisor mentioned that if you do a double major with philosophy as one, it looks really good applying to medical school.

thats what I'm saying. If you only have a degree in philosophy, thats not going to get you very far. But yeah if you're using the degree to satisfy pre-professional requirements. Then of course it will work just fine. I've taken two philosophy courses so far. Idk it's just something that isn't practically used by itself.
But of course it teaches you how to think.

good choice man..as i can see ur going to CU boulder which is another good choice...i just finished my freshyear at cu boulder in the business school for finance and the classes for the business school arnt alot of fun or arnt very interesting but ive been told every year the classes get better...as for electives you can take ANYTHING you want or interests you..i took intro to humanities and a few others which were all real interesting but there are soo many choices. stay in the business school for now and you can always drop out of it later if you dont like it. its a good starting point compared to the people that are open option that have no clue as to what they are doing in college.
