i am wondering what you guys think is better.
the big difference between the two is the megapixels, but does it really make that big of a difference? i realize that there is a larger image recorded, but does the quality of the image improve that much more?

new d80 coming out really soon, which is definitely better than a rebel xt spec wise. but of course, when it comes to buying dslr's, you have to choose the whole system (i.e. lenses, flash, etc). so the point is, don't just choose the body.

You get better lenses with canons. I like the d70 body more though. I find it easier to work with

You can get good pictures with either. The extra megapixels don't matter that much unless you're planning on blowing your shots up pretty big.
Like was said above, choose based on the whole system. When you're using a dslr you have to think about what lenses you're going to want to use and what company has lenses/flashes/etc that best suit your needs.
Nikon has a new camera body coming out soon, most likely replacing the D70 so you have to keep that in mind. Canon is rumored to be releasing a new body or two in the next couple months as well. So if you can wait, you might want to see what the next couple months reveal.
