I'm in Delta Tau Delta. I'm going to be a sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh next year. It all depends on the school. Delts here at Pitt are looked at very well. But there are schools that have really shitty Delt chapters. In fact SAE here on campus, is looked down upon by alot of people, including myself. They have a pretty bad rep as far as giving girls roofies and date rape. You won't find any upperclassman girls at their parties here. But idk what SAE is like where you are going.

Greek life is probably in the top 3 decisions I made in college so far. As long as you join a good one, you'll love it. And don't just choose one for the parties either. Houses have so much more to offer than beer and women. And if thats all your house is about, then that chapter is pretty shitty.

Since I pledged, i've done an assload of communtiy service, and been really active on campus. My grades even went up by .2.

grubix2 - i know exactly what you mean...at santa clara (my bro's college) Sigma Pi (his fraternity...) is the best there, and at many other colleges, it kinda blows chunks..

i'm probably gonna pledge somewhere at boulder, but i dont think i'll be doing that till second semester if at all...

well in the south SAEs are known for abiding to a strict honor code and are expected to exemplify the chivalrous and gentlemenly behavior of Gentrified southerners....at the school i go to and most schools in the south, SAEs, KAs, and ATOs run shit

At UVM, the greek grades are a joke. There's a few kids in my house that have had a 1.0 gpa or lower. It's horrendous, but they'll get ya drunk! ha woopee.

Actally, at UVM (AGR in particular) it's cheaper for me to pay dues, live in the house (a single room, fulltime cook, and parking) then to live in the dorms, NOT counting Mealplans or parking.



Andrew, What's the situation with mixers at hampden? Since there are no girls/sororities?

western PA give it up. i was a PI LAMBDA PHI at IUP, it saved my college career. with ou tmy fraternity and my fraternity life i would have failed out of school, my want to be in the fraternity kept me motivated for my school work. i knew if i failed out thast i could no longer be part of the things i enjoyed. but i agree if you are joining just for the beer and parties not only are you joining for the wrong reasons but you will not be any good to you chapter either..


i ve partie dat the pitt Delt house a few time's its right down the road from Pi lambs right. you guys got a decent house.

or any other sport; the thing is with fraternities, if you find a good one with good people, they'll be your friends whether you're in it or not. I have 2 really good friends that will be just as good of friends after this year (when I leave my fraternity).

yea so what if we owned slaves, i guarentee most of your families owned slaves if you lived in the north too, because there were more slave owners in the north than in the south, so i dont know what youre exactly trying to say

Another thing- Most of your preconceived notions on people in fraternities are wrong as well

We dont gel our hair

We dont wear abercrombie, hollister or any of that other bullshit

We dont listen to shitty pop punk like greenday or Fall out boy or anything else on the American Pie Soundtrack

In the south at least, Gentlemen in fraternities wear Vineyard Vines, Southern Proper, Brooks Brothers, Lacoste, Mtn Hardwear, Patagonia and Polo

We wear Blazers and Ties to football games

We carry half a dozen coozies in our cars

We only wear Costa del mar or Bolle Sunglasses that must be equipped with croakies

And we shoot alot of random shit from our porches

Apple. Thank you for stating the biggest attack on fraternities. I was in a mood to defend it.

To tell you the truth. I thought the same thing the first semester my freshman year. "I don't need this shit. Why am I going to pay $400 a semester to be in some club for friends?" I went through my entire first semester and watched and observed. I know many colleges are different, but here at pitt 30% of the student population is greek. So its hard not to take notice. I knew which guys and in which houses I didn't like. But I did take notice of a certain house that I did like.

I knew a few guys that were already in this house. And I was invited down for parties and stuff a few times. A lot of the guys thought I was cool and even invited me to study with them in the library. I met some upperclassman guys that honostly really helped me in my classes. And keep in mind this was the end of my first semester, and I wasn't a brother or a pledge or anything.

If this is what it was like now, I definitely was interested in becoming a brother.

In highschool I was a varsity lacrosse letterman. Starting middie and the whole thing. When you go to the collegiate level, you are really stepping things up. I am double majoring in Biology and Anthropology, and getting a minor in Chemistry. Do you really think I have the time to play a college sport?

Good fraternities (and I stress GOOD) provide exactly what they say they do: brotherood. Guys that look out for each other and pull eachother along. People to help you when you're down. They don't simply provide friends, beer, and drunken sluts. In fact a large portion of our house has steady girlfriends. People who aren't close with a house only see things like parties, and the other stupid shit that happens.

Don't forget, fraternities were good enough for a large portion of US presidents, Sentators and State Govenors. As well as a huge amount of corporate CEO's, and other celebrities.

Just in case you decide to retort with something defensive, I might as well clarify a few things before you say some bullshit about x, y, or z.

I had / have bids at Phi Delta Theta, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Alpha Epsilon and I regularly hang out with pretty much everybody from all three.

Fraternity life varies ENORMOUSLY from one house to another, and one school to another.

Show up, evaluate the situation and make a decision. You will hear the entire gamut of comments / advice from kids anywhere about how they love/hate/regret/wish etc...

Make up your mind for yourself bro, and if you made the "wrong" decision you'll be fine as long as you're a sociable guy and can get along with people. Hence, there is no wrong decision.

The only reason I didn't join was because I'm a lazy fuck and that doesn't bode well for an engineer who's already neck-deep in academic hell. I'd like to think that it's best being able to chill with whoever I want, whenever I want, wherever I want and being welcome in any of those situations. Who knows though, everybody's different so don't listen to anybody but yourself.

Oh I know. Haha believe me, I don't want to be like most of those guys either. But I just meant it as a little joke that they must be doing something right. Being successful and making something of myself is my top priority. And I often sacrifice things like skiing for it. I don't really live all that close to the mountains. About 1.5 hour drive. My family doesn't really have that much money. And my parents are very casual skiers. So it's hard to get support from them

I want to be able to be 40 years old and have my own little place in the mountains. I want my kids to be able to ski something other than East coast groomers. I want them to be able to have a park ski, as well as a powder ski. Idk I'm 19 now. I want them to have all of the things I wanted.

oh, I totaly agree. And at my school, there is only one frat... and it is kinda lame. Dont get me wrong, the guys are all super nice... but it is pretty much lame. And i get brotherhood from the rugby team, an unbelivable support network... the same goes for any team at my school. I mean, yeah you get closer to people when you live with them... but when you put yourself through hell for 4 hours a day with someone else, and then you have to watch their back and they have to watch your in what can be life or death situations...

And you know what esle... Its not just the people in Frats who will go out of their way to help out a younger class man, and prepetuating the idea that you need to be 'special' to help someone is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.

Oh, and alot of Poiticians steal money, lie and worship moloch... the frats that they were part of (most of them were members of the skull and bones) are known to carry out moch human sacrifices, and were started on drug money... I really hope that isnt what your greek life is about.
