the pope is german, but is the leader of Vatican City,which has no affiliation with Italy whatsoever, If the pope didnt want Germany to win, it would most definately be Switzerland, due to their centuries old ties

it is still a seperate entity, San Marino is in Italy as well, but share completely different cultures

tis' the smallest country in the world. It does have greater ties to the Swiss than the Italians and you can tell this because its the Swiss Guard who surround the Vatican.
