So I know a lot of people throw the word "poser" around. The word "poser" to me, means a kid that has really good gear, and just sits around the park and doesn't hit anything. But, I think that a lot of people use it the wrong way. Like, when you see a kid with ill gear fall bad on an easy box. I think that as long as you're seriously trying, then you're not a poser. Because to some kids, things comes harder than others. And if I was that kid who was trying that box and fell, and some older freeskiers were talking shit and calling me a poser and saying that I sucked, then I would be really pissed, and it would change my attitude about skiing.
This brings me to my other point... I think that people should be less harsh in the NS videos. Some kid might have a very succesful first year in his eyes and post an edit, and it gets bashed to shit. Now, his attitude on skiing is changed greatly, and some people on NS have even left because of their videos getting bashed.
I think that we should all just ski and let ski. And worry about ourselves, not other kids that we don't even know.

Def. true. A lot of people work hard to be able to afford the gear they have, so people shouldn't give anyone shit. As long as they're trying.

I agree...because even if they aren't that good, they are still representing the sport, and not just "posing."

about what you said about some things come easier to some then others, i know what you mean. i can hit almost any jump you put infront of me, but i cannot do a rail that is 3 feet off the ground. im not sure why, they are just terrifing for me.

I have a love/hate relationship for this discussion and topic...but, to me a poser is someone who is basically claiming hard. If they're saying how incredible they are and all the tricks they can throw, but when the throwndown comes, they don't preform up to what they're clamin. Having the newest and hottest gear is more of a case jealously, but can add to the poser-factor.
If you have the money, from hard work, or nice parents, and decide to spend it on new ski gear, and put money into any aspect of skiing, go for it. I'm not an all-star but love new stuff, and work hard for it. If you ski, have fun, and actually attempt to freeski and get better, then no, you're not a poser.

And, if you don't have anything to good to say about some random movie-maker edit of a bunch of weekend amatures on NS, don't say it.
I'll watch the videos I want to and love the ones I do...and those people will have a general concensus that there video is already rad.
If the video sucks, I won't say anything and just move on, and let the unnecessary bashing come from all the others.

i cant quote both of your posts, but i completly agree. if u act all hardcore, but when it comes time to perform, and you cant, then youre a poser, but if u try to perform well, then right on.
as far as vids go, im the same way. i make a vid that i think is decent, but since i dont throwdown in most peoples eyes i am not gonna bother posting it on ns where itll be bashed from every angle from everyone besides my friends, so i just put it in my aim profile so all my friends can see it and think that im the man. and make me feel good.

yeah i hate people like that. There is this group of kids at my park(Snowboarders too) andwhen i fall trying to like spin on or something cool to a rail they laugh. And then when they go the just 50-50 like 1/4 of the rail. IT PISSES ME OFF!

i think that if your a skier that has nice stuff and your falling on easy stsuff, its fine. but when people like that are saying they are good and being cocky and stuff, then i will call them a poser

i agree with you except if the "poser" is talkin shit about how hes so good, then he cant perform. being modest about your skills is also a good thing.

i use to be like that, i would call kids fags or poser just cuz they couldnt ski well in the park, and then i realized how much of a dick i was being, and how unkewl it is to do that, and that i use to be like that, so i never do it anymore

About the video hating...I don't hang out much in the videos because my computer is mildly retarded, but I do contribute to the negativity in the picture sections once in a while.
I think people get way too upset about haters. Imagine an NS where everyone said "whoa that was so sick" to everything, where everything always got a 10. Where there was never conflict. That would be lame as hell.
Now, I don't think it's necessary to tell every ex-racer who's just learning how to slide a 6-foot ride-on flatbox he's a flaming homosexual, either. But if someone titles his video "OMG SICKEST 3 EVER!" and it's really not so hot...I don't see anything wrong with letting him know what's up. And if the kid is claiming urban, but there's three feet of fresh powder on the steps, I'll probably call him out on it. Such comments tend to be at least mildly constructive, even if they don't come out in a "That's really cool, but next time try..." sort of way.

I'm going to go ahead and agree here as well. Even though nobody in this thread has sucessfully spelled "poseur" correctly. It's all about just getting out there and trying to get better. Some kids are faster then others, some kids have been out there longer than others. And who cares if you better than some kid who has sick gear, for all you know he/she might have been bagging groceries all summer just so he can afford that shit, there's no need to trash on him/her.

Calling anyone a poser, I don't agree with.
In a sport where pretty much everyone is sneaking around, stealing other people's identities, it's hypocritical to call people posers.
What if that kid that's skiing through the park, not hitting anything, just got over a pretty fucking gnarly injury and is trying to build up their mental game to hit it some other day?
"Poser" is still a stereotype. Don't mess with stereotypes. They're unfair and we're all old enough to know prejudices get no one anywhere.

i love it when the sit around kind of "poser" kids try to start shit with people who are in the park to get shit done and learn how to ride. those are the kinds of kids that need a snap kick to the throat.

i totally agree, ns is one of the harshest places around anywhere, theres tons of really good kids on here and im sure theres some not so good kids on here, and just because somebody puts up a pic that isnt incredible pro material they get bashed like crazy, like for instance schmitz put up a vid of him skiing on a glacier in the summer and just because he enjoyed the run and didnt straightline he got mad bashing, which is soooo gay. so everybody needs to layoff and were all skiers looking to have a good time, im not in a competition with anybody on here to see who im better than or worse than, so everybody needs to chill.

yeah its total crap the way peole treat each other sometimes on here. I wonder how many kids have quit skiing or seriously considered quitting because of some of the comments on this site. granted, the kid is going to be really weak not to take some criticism by people on the internet, or the criticism is unessisarily harsh or jsut plain insulting. It pisses me off so much to see people discrediting other's skiing simply because it isn't that great. People have to start somewhere.

yea, even kids like tanner or pollard started somewhere and proll sucked fora little while, but now look at them, i wonder if there have been any would be pro's that were turned away from skiing because of other people's harshness, not just on this site but anywhere.

i really enjoyed reading this thread and the first post. someone finally pointed out something valid without getting a response like "thats gay" or "your gay." no hate at all. i do think that everyone should respect how some people learn slower than others. most the people that get bashed are just starting park. they can be real naasty skiers otherwise. that resembles my case. im just starting park and stuff but i rip it up in the woods and powder. so yeah, gota be more considerate in the videios section but really everywhere.

It's true what you say, but we've all been bashed and we all come to realize that this isn't the site to post your shit up if it isn't thowing something amazing. Talk to anyone about NS in real life and they will tell you the kids on NS suck. I don't think it'll change their attitude about skiing as a whole, but change their attitude about the skiing site. Talking to a few people that are on NS, they all have been trashed (including me) for a trick that isn't a switch bio 9 or a 270 on, pretzle 270 off a rail... or even trashed on what they are wearing. It's rediculous but you come to realize what I've already stated.

in my opinion, you should get halfway good before you rep the premo gear, i think it is because most of us skiers grew up with handmedowns and nothin too special, but then by the time you leash up the parents your already good enough to be out of the poser stage, wheres most "posers" just start out with the good gear, and no skill, which they most likely will outgrow, but i think the term poser derives from jealousy
