my computer's harddrive has become completely full due to all the footage on my computer and so i was wondering how i would edit footage stored only on my external harddrive or if it's even possible. im working in adobe premiere pro by the way. specific instructions would be extreamly helpful because im not exactly a computer wizz.

any USB2 or Firewire drive will have a fast enough transfer rate.

i like to edit with footae thats runnign native off my computer, but whatever floats your boat...
i suggest keeping all the projects your not working on on the hardrive and keeping the working projects running on your pc's HD

i use an external hard drive to video edit--as long as you always have the hard drive when you're editing, you should be fine. when you capture just set the directory to somewhere in the external drive.

im just wondering i would get adobe to read the files off the external harddrive. i tried going project>project manager and it seems like thats how you would do it but whenever i start running it an error comes up. so i need to find another way of doing it

when im importing to premier i just create a new project, change the directory of the project to somewhere in the external drive, capture the footy (which automatically goes into the external drive then), and then open whatever project i want to work on and import the new footy.
or, i think you could transfer files to the external drive, and then when premier asks what happened to the files, just locate them in the external drive and "show" the program where they went.
im sure there's more ways to do it but that seems to work for me.

That is pretty much the only way to do it if you have a decent amount of high quality footage. Most computers wont be able to hold all of it. So, basically, do all of your video work using the external hardrive, then when you export the finished product, I would recommend exporting it to your computer's built in hardrive.

I would clean up your internal drive. When you're done editing a project, export the final product and delete all the footage. If you keep and label your tapes, you'll always have it. no reason to make it clutter up your drive.

i am in the exact same situation. i have zero room on my computer, same editing program and im about to buy an external, but i dont know which one to buy. what are the best ones, or does quality really only pend on size of the drive?
