Yeah i'm pretty sure most snowboard "equivalents" are just like hook-up sites. At least from what i've seen.
Why do you think there are so many Snowboarders on NS?

yeah, snowboard.com is like the same as myspace.com. It's gay. It's just a bunch of freakin loosers trying to get shitty snowboarding girls who think these guys are super snowboarders, to go on webcam with them.

Newschoolers can be compared to nothing.
It is vastly superior to the Internet.

i think the uniqueness of NS can be mainly attributed to the tight nature of the freeskiing community. also, since freeskiing and the new school scene has yet to explode like nowboarding did in the mid to late 90s, we do not experience an abundance of gapers, posers, and copiers. In short, most of the people here, like skiing because skiing is fun, not because it's cool, and that's what makes NS so great. now i could write an essay, but you get these basic principles that lead to the greatness that is newschoolers.com, and now a select few snowboarders who also enjoy snow have turned from the trendy ways of their heathen brethren (who scrape the powder), and have found people who also truly enjoy winter.

That'd all be great if any of it were true, but in fact, it's ass backwards.
Freeskiing is in no way a tighter communtiy than snowboarding. That's ridiculous. Snowboarding has a way larger community that is far more in touch with it's indentity as a sport. Snowboarding has solidified it's place in the action sports community, while freeskiing continues to struggle. Case in point: 2006 X Games ski-slopestyle cancellation. Nobody cared except for people on this site.
The majority of the newschoolers community is OBSESSED with what is "cool". That is why you see threads reading: "Shawn White did this!" or "MFM did that!" or "what do snowboarders think?" Do you honestly believe there is anyone, in any other sport other than ours, talking about how smooth Jon Olsson is?
And to say we don't have "gapers" or "posers"? Uh, have you been to a resort lately? And "copiers"? Do you think freeskiing made up the terms "cab", "rodeo" or "misty"? And that's a small example.
Because freeskiing has yet to fully reach it's potential (if it ever will), it will always be searching for a place (i.e. RESPECT) in the action sports community. Not to say it hasn't made huge strides in the last 5 years, but there's a long way to go.
You said it yourself, people need to ski because it is fun and stop worrying what everyone else is doing, including other skiers.
Until then, I think it was MFM that said it best: "Skiing will always be gay. Just look at Newschoolers.com and you'll see why."

to clarify: by gapers and posers i was talking about kids who talk big to boost their fragile egos, but once they hit the slopes they can barely ride a box, and lack the ambition to beat themselves up to improve their meager skills. i agree that skiing does have these as well, just not in the apalling numbers that dominate the scene of the one plankers. and i think you miss understand me when i say tighter community, as i mean tight-nit, as it the people in freeskiing tend to be supportive of one another, and there is much information shared between the community. this is due to the fact that we are smaller and much less mainstream, so the people involved do use something like NS to communicate with similar minded people. and it is because of this tightness, you are able to find new people that you can meet up with at your local hill to take a couple runs with, hangout, or even film.

its not ass backwards. you can not say snowboarding is tighter than the newschool skiing scene. the reason it doesnt seem so is because yes the skiing scene is WAY smaller. but those that are in it ARE more tightly bound. do not even begin to tell me that even if there was a snowboarding equivalent to newschoolers, that they would be able to have something like the ski equipment section where people frequently buy and sell items solely on trust (and occasionally paypal). snowboarding isnt tight enough to have that, there would be people on there screwing other people over right and left. and im not saying everyone would be like that, there definitely is a tight group in snowboarding, but that is tarnished because there are more gapers and "cool" kids who just dont get it.
2006 x games slopstyle cancellation: yeah the only people who cared were people on this site because skiing has yet to explode like snowboarding. if that happened to snowboarding, there would be the core group that would be pissed similar to the newschoolers community, but it would also get attention from other gapers and posers who snowboard rarely, suck, and do so to be "cool". ok you can say that is because snowboarding is bigger, but if thats what "bigger" means then we dont want that!! we dont want a bunch of retards ruining our sport. in time it will inevitably gain respect simply because its growing too fast to control.

i think utmeathead has some repressed anger issues.
we are tighter. boarders dont go up to each other and act like friends. freeskiers are undeniably, united. if i see a kid on ar5s or something, im going to talk to him, im going to want to be his friend.
there are so many boarders, that usually only groups of friends ride together. there isnt that sense of wonder that can unite like we have.
skiing is more than catching on. everywhere ive been it is catching on. a few years back there were like a handfull of freeskiers. now there are more and more everday. boarders are even converting. there are so many freeskiers now. i have no idea where you ride, but from what ive seen, we ARE blowing up. we have our own styles, methods, and products. yeah some are copied, but then again what sport doesnt copy? especially in the extreme sports catagory.
we are tight knit, and there are TONS of us. NS actually is a great way for people to know other riders. you dont have kids on snowboarder.com meeting another kid on the hill with a board being like "hey arent you montoyajake?".
here it happens, and its frequent. skiing is in no way gay. i think you are a complete idiot if you think skiing is gay and no one does it but us NS members.
you honestly remind me exactly of Christophe in "black like me".

You are a fucking moron. The reason why freestyle skiing is a tight knit community, much more then snowbaording, is because we are small, and snowboarding has been put on TV. You know how every kid in your high school thought skiing was gay, and that if you skied you were gay. Then you ask them what they do, and they say snowboarding. You then ask how many times do you go a season, and were do you go. Now you just made them look like an ass for saying skiing is gay, when really half the snowboarding community is a bunch of gapers that only go 2 times a season.

agreed with the identity part freesking has yet to find its own identity, we just call whatever snowboarders are doing our identity. Case in point if snowboarding wasn't here would freesking exist? I don't know if freesking will ever have a true identity because the true roots of freestyle skiing are from snowboarding.
