American cars are terribly unreliable (jeep s are especially notorious) so go with the vw, unless it has way more miles on it. Check both values at kelleybluebook.com. Japanese cars are the most reliable, then German, then American. So go japanese or German.

diesel is cheaper and more efficient. more MPG than regular gasoline
i drive a gasoline based cabriolet standard/manual. a 97 to be exact, it has over 200 000 km on it and ive got to be honest ive had few problems with it, the clutch had an issue but it was fixed and it was a simple cheap fix. the car handles like a dream, has pretty good pickup. I love to drive it, its fun handles like a dream, and unlike the tj you can whip around a corner and not feel like your going to tip.
ive driven both the TJ and the Cabriolet, i prefer the cabriolet, also german cars handle a LOT better than american on average... i drive a jeep liberty on a regular basis and you just cant even compare.
if you need to get to the mountain in this car, the tj however is your best bet, but seeing as its only convertables your lookin at it doubt that is a concern...
any more q's pm or post or w.e
hope that ramble helped

get a used TDI golf or jetta. you'll love it. plus with a hard roof you'll have more options for winter skiing.

You will not get any help of NS because people don't listen to your choices and you'll get a ton of other names of cars which won't help you out a bit.
But the jeep, I just sold my jeep (01) because the transmission was about to go for the second time. We've had 2 other jeeps in the last 4 years and they've both shitted out on us too. So ya, 3 jeeps, 3 shitty cars. Super fun though.

If he didn't have 2 specific cars that he was able to go look at/buy, why would he randomly bust out the cabrio into his options?

a cabriot is a very girly/gay car for a guy to drive, they are very fugly imo too. I own 2 jeeps, one has 195,000 miles it, original everyting. never had ANY probs with it what so ever. My parents have both own 2 jeeps a piece, no probems their either.
the TJ will prolly have the 4.0 I6 which has beeen voted numeroius times as one of THE BEST engines ever created beauce of the power the little 242ci engine makes and its tremendious track record.

VW cabriolet is a chick car, get the jeep and buy a lift kit for it. Also the jeep might break sooner because it's american but the VW would cost more to fix because it's foreign

I was just wondering, if you leave your convertible out in a snowstorm, would the hood collapse from the weight of all the snow?
